Today we’d like to introduce you to Vonnesha Kennedy.
Vonnesha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story comes from lots of faith and lots of pain. As a little girl, I endured a large amount of internal pain and as time went by, I became super independent. At 18 years old, I began my walk with faith, which was one of the most amazing things I have ever done. Once I started my journey, I began to experience self-aware and self-confidence. Everything started to feel like nothing was impossible. I began to live life on my own terms. I began to see things I never saw. Life was great. Then, at 21 I got pregnant and my life wasn’t just about me anymore. My life was all about my daughter, so I started living my life around her. I knew that I had to become something great and successful for her.
So, through all the pregnancy hormones (depression, mood swings, insecurities) I made sure I got up and attended classes. I knew that if I give up then I’d feel like I failed her. I can’t fail my baby. She became my motivation. After I decided on a name for her, Charisma Skai’Bella M., I then named my other baby (my business) Skai’s Shade Boutique. Skai’s Shade Boutique was a sunglass boutique, and then I wanted to reach more women. I became a Corporation to sell women clothing and accessories. I want to make women feel good and secure even in their dark times.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There has been many obstacles and challenges. After pregnancy, I experienced postpartum depression which left me feeling really low. I put a pause on my business to focus on my mental health. It was the hardest thing I ever had to experience but I eventually started to feel like myself again. Putting a pause on Skai’s Shade Boutique was hard itself because I then had to build my brand back up and reach my audience 10x more because of my sudden absence.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Skai’s Shade Boutique – what should we know?
Skai’s Shade Boutique is a clothing and accessory boutique for chic and bossy women. SSB is known for super cute sunglasses. Also, I hold networking events and conferences for women under my business. I’m proud of the outcome I’ve seen. Here at Skai’s Shade Boutique, you not only get to look good but you get emotional support rather its business or personal.
