Thanks for sharing your story with us Simon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was a snowboard instructor in Canada, where I was born and raised. I was studying commerce and business administration at Laurentian University while bartending and serving on the side. After school, I knew I wanted to remain in the restaurant industry, and began a career in management at Keg Steakhouse & Bar, a popular Canadian chain. While I enjoyed the industry, I was ready to try business ownership, starting with a snow removal company with a business partner. When I saw my friend’s success with his Weed Man he had opened in Canada, I decided to buy into it. After working together for three years in Sudbury, Ontario, my hometown, it gave me the confidence I needed to veer out on my own. With all the Weed Man territories sold out in Canada, I saw the opportunity to open my own in Houston. It was nerve-racking to pick up my life and start over in a new country but I felt secure in the franchise system that I was buying into because I had seen it work and the success of it. Texas was the perfect challenge and fit for me to see my vision through, especially with more of a year-round need for lawn care.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Getting established in a totally new country isn’t easy. I realized all the little things that I took for granted when we started our original business in Canada- knowing where my local print shop was, knowing local resources, and having a feel of the territory. I also came to Houston as a business owner without a working credit card or a license. Once I got everything sorted out in terms of becoming a citizen, I had to reroute all of my Canadian bank accounts and expenses to American ones. It’s taken six months to come into my own, but now it feels second nature. It makes the business that much more rewarding and I’m happy to say that this Canadian is starting to do more Texas geared activities.
