Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Moreland.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I began painting seriously in 2016, I am the proverbial self-taught artist. I have to thank my husband Bill for his unwavering support, it has allowed me to do so much with my art life!
Knowing I have always had a creative side today, I am thoroughly enjoying the artistic blessings God has given me. Having spent 14 years in the custom framing industry is definitely a plus, now, I frame art for myself.
I love to paint with color and texture after I had finished up working with acrylic pouring (which is another passion) my adventure into oil/cold wax abstracts began early in 2018 and continues today. I have worked to find ways to give back, donating art to Wings of Hope Equitherapy, hosting Kindness Matters this past July and spending time with our Conroe Central Market’s Saturday Special Friends. New pieces will be available at the Glades Cultural Center Nov. 30 & Dec. 1 with the 4th Annual Christmas Extravaganza with the 2 Girls, A Guy and a Trailer Group.
Please tell us about your art.
I consider myself a realist painter (animals, pets, portraits, flowers, etc.) and I wanted to expand and grow as an artist. I met Kari Schmidt with Cornerstone Framing and became a member of the Conroe Central Market Fine Art Gallery where along with several other artists we display over 200 pieces of original art.
Every artist finds their way forward, a big challenge for me was abstract art. After viewing videos on YouTube (Annmarie Ridderhof, Pamela Caughey and Karen Hale are favorites ) and researching this style my interests were peaked. Joining the Conroe Art League has been a wonderful experience, they hosted a visiting artist from Rockwall, Texas, Doris Vasek who gave a great demonstration in the basics of oil/cold wax. From there, I had the confidence this style of abstract design was something I could do on my own and dived right in and began creating my own pieces. Most often, I find myself painting scenes, reflections, flowers, and the amazing part are the journey layering textures of oil/cold wax only to either cover it up or scrape through it to reveal the hidden parts. Each piece is exciting and I am usually working on several pieces at a time. As you close, you can see each piece’s history and unique characteristics.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
Each person has inner creativity, Art allows for that exploration and sharing. Personally, I want to see more joy, more love, more time spent listening and finding ways to value our differences. I hope my art makes someone stop for just a moment or two, smile and fall in love with the colors God has given us to see.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
