Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Severance.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Wendy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Two years ago, my daughter and I began a mission to find a way to help young girls through the difficult transitions they face going through the middle and high school years. It is such an awkward time with puberty and changing body’s and if not guided in the right way, can cause a lack of self-confidence and feelings of insecurity. It began to be a passion of mine and my daughters as we began to notice people around her compromising their self-worth to become liked or popular and the desperation that went along with that just to feel liked by others.
My daughter, Emily, was able to get through those years with the love and support of my husband and I, her two brothers and her faith in God’s plan for her life, but it wasn’t easy for her or us. Others were not so fortunate.
At Be Unique, we believe that each and every person has been created unique, different from anyone else, for a reason and with great purpose. Having this knowledge allows each of us to take a look at our unique God Given gifts which help guide us to our greatest strengths. When we can find a way to base our lives on those things we are good at doing and meant to do, we can create a positive direction for our lives. When young ladies learn these very important milestones early on, they are able to feel confident in themselves, secure in their environment and have a positive direction for their life. As our slogan goes, Confident, Secure and with direction!
As a former owner and director of Academy of Models and Talent in Nashville Tennessee, I wanted Be Unique to be something so much more fulfilling than a modeling experience. Every young lady is beautiful inside and out and it is our intent to help bring these unique qualities to the surface so she will recognize who she is through Christ. There is no one else like her. We want each young lady to find a pathway that will be perfect for her while creating a prosperous life that is fulfilling.
At Be Unique, we offer programs in Inner Beauty and Outer Beauty, thus creating a well-rounded young lady.
We believe it is best to work from the inside out in fun and interactive ways combining Inner Beauty with outward appearance and sophistication.
Out programs are perfect for girls who are 6th through 8th grades. We teach on an individual basis or in groups.
Through our 6-week personal development Inner Beauty program, students will feel an increase in self-confidence, create a positive self-image of who they are and gain an understanding of Gods plan for their life. We will discuss detailed issues on managing social media and the problems that exist with the advancement in technology. Our Health and Nutrition class will cover an array of topics for managing a healthy diet, lifestyle and exercise routine and will include preparing a refreshing healthy recipe.
Finally, it is our intent and goal that each student learns how to create a “personal GPS” that will assist them on their ideal pathway, and gain a positive and prosperous direction for her life.
Our 8-week personal appearance outer beauty classes combine fashion, fun and creativity into one spectacular program! We make our rounds in the studio learning posture and walking, body movement and the art of dining, while understanding the importance of conversation and first impressions. Our young ladies learn technical applications in the care and keeping of their physical body through proper instruction in skincare, facial symmetry and daytime makeup application. They will cultivate a look and behavior of self-confidence with class and sophistication. We include cell phone use, table manners and putting together a wardrobe style that compliments her body, personality and genuine spirit. Upon completion of the program she will participate in a mini photo shoot that will display a beautiful memory of her experience at Be Unique.
Through the combination of the inner and outer beauty programs, we feel this assists in creating a well-rounded young lady who is confident within herself from the inside out and able to form boundaries that will protect her values and moral interests for many years to come.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Because Be Unique is just that, “unique”, we don’t really have any competition as a business, however, it’s hard for people to understand what we actually do because there is nothing like it anywhere around. It is a new entity, a new concept, to combine inner beauty with outward appearance in the same program. Typically, you have modeling schools which instruct on outward beauty and church groups with bible study or youth group meetings for inner qualities. We are Christian based however we teach classes on personal appearance as well. I feel they are a good combination because everyone loves to feel beautiful. It is just so much more rewarding when beautiful people are feel beautiful on the inside as well and can project a positive influence to those around them.
Be Unique – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I think we are most known for our Inner and Outer Beauty combination program. We specialize in creating a positive direction in life by understanding our self-worth through Christ and his Unique creation of us. It’s not rocket science. Everyone knows that no two people are alike but we rarely take minute to think about what that might mean to each individual. We are unique because we each have divine purpose. If we all wanted to be like someone else, we could not be ourselves and therefore could not accomplish the important things meant for us. And when we try to be like someone else, we will never be able to experience what God has planned for “our” lives. I feel that what sets us apart is that we know the struggle that young ladies encounter throughout their pubertal years. We know that they want attention, to be liked and have friends. We developed a program that we hope will assist them to become the absolute best person they can be, inside and out.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I absolutely define success by seeing direct results of my programs. Sometimes it is quick and sometimes it takes time. When young girls are thriving and are happy, and they feel great about who they are as people, then I have done my job! It’s not about having a job for me. I want young people to know they are special and I think it’s incredible when they find that one thing that makes them stand out above others.
Happy girls are the prettiest! At times we see a really pretty girl who just doesn’t seem to glow. So beautiful on the outside but she just doesn’t shine for some reason. Girls who are self-confident and content with who they are as a person have a confidence that glows from the inside out. You can absolutely see it.
