Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Welch.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Lily Lucy Co is a story that starts off with a personal journey to find a solution to a problem. Growing up, I suffered from a chronic skin disorder commonly known as eczema. It is said this disorder is usually associated with allergies and asthma, both of which I have as well. Aside from the many days battling pollen and grass, along with struggling to breathe, I also had to combat this skin disorder, while facing ridicule from my peers, due to the unwarranted dry and discolored patches on my skin. Through my many years of focusing on treating my skin, I developed an interest in skincare. It was through my skincare journey I learned many things. One of which is how what you put on your skin is absorbed and goes directly to the bloodstream. With this alarming fact, I later discovered the many products I used had toxic chemicals that could have adverse effects, not just on my skin but on my health too. Shortly after, I threw them all away. But what would I use now? With that new found knowledge, I made a point to create natural products I could use on my skin that would help keep it healthy and moisturized without worrying about what was going into my body. As time progressed, I shared my homemade skincare products with family and friends. Many of them suffered from skin disorders such as myself, and their experience, along with their feedback, pushed me to take a passion of mine and turn it into something I could share with others.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This has been a challenge for me to say the least. My business is still evolving and growing. Like many people who choose to venture out into entrepreneurial waters, there is no smooth road paved for success. When it comes to the creative side of a business, the marketing, ad campaigns, content creation, I can do that everyday. However, I’ve had to learn the analytics side of running a business and let me be the first to say, it is not my favorite. I do not come from a background of business but, I just knew there was something I wanted share with others that could help them see self-care through skincare from a different perspective. I wanted to give people an alternative and show them skincare can be practiced with your health in mind. That is what keeps me pushing through any challenge. Through this process of growing my business, I am still facing obstacles, but I look at those as stepping stones. I am a believer that every experience, positive or negative, is an opportunity for growth.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lily Lucy Co story. Tell us more about the business.
I am in the business of providing skincare products for those who are looking for an alternative to products with additives and toxic chemicals. It is important for me to show others that you can take care of your skin, being conscious about what you put on it, which in turn, helps you become more conscious about your health. A lot of what I created is catering to your full body. More specifically, I have created a line of all-natural body scrubs and blended oils. Many people focus solely on having a regimen specifically for their face while neglecting the rest of their body. In all likelihood, they keep their routine to a bare minimum of only cleansing the body then moisturizing. What has failed to be recognized is the benefit and implementation of exfoliation; not on the face but on the full body. One added step, like exfoliation, will prompt a massive difference to the appearance of the skin. When it comes to moisturizing the skin, I wanted to choose ingredients that were recognizable. I also wanted to use ingredients that were known to be beneficial and promote skin health. One of the things I am most proud of about my business is reaching people who are not fully knowledgeable when it comes to skincare or self-care for that matter. I am deeply rooted in the belief that self-love must be learned, and one way to learn to love one’s self is to become knowledgeable of self-care.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I wouldn’t say luck has played a role in life. In some ways, I’ve been groomed for this, given the vision and gift to bring this business into fruition. I am a believer of grace and favor. Throughout my life and still to this day the universe, known to me as God, has been on my side. Through my still developing experience, my effort met with my passion, discipline, a constant push to just move, and the hand of the most high leading me through has gotten me to where I am today.
