Meet Will Robinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Robinson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Will. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
What’s up! My name is William Robinson, but my friends call me Will and I was born and bred in Jackson, MS. Being an artist feels as if it was destined for me because art was just the way I’ve always expressed myself. The majority of my immediate family members were artists in their own way and I’d like to think all of their artistic abilities blended into me at birth. I was even the “artist friend” in my circle. Still am to this day.

I started experimenting with graphics in high school in 2009. This was around the time when people were really into that ‘Picnic/Picassa’ era with the cool graphic/edited photos and profile pictures on their social media. So I started there by editing and designing pictures for my friends and my peers were really digging it. So with that positive feedback and reception, that made me want to go even harder and invest even more into doing graphics. So, I took a leap and got this crazy broken version of photoshop and started playing around with that and fell in love with it. I had gotten so good with photoshop; it inspired me to want to major in Graphic Design. So I did.

In 2011, I enrolled at The University of Southern Mississippi and majored in Graphic Design. Throughout the course of my college years, I learned to really love art and design, even so much that I began to dabble in photography. I remember taking two photography courses in 2012 and absolutely loving it. Photography was so organic and natural for me. It just felt right and I didn’t have to work hard to be good at it. So I invested my time into perfecting it. I even learned how to merge what I’d been learning as a graphic designer to my photography. From there, ‘ROBNSN Photography’ became a thing. Over the years, my appreciation for art and photography continues to grow as my business continues to thrive. Today, I’ve attained some pretty notable publication over the last couple of years, I’ve built a pretty solid clientele, and I’ve even got some major things in the works to further expand the brand of ROBNSN Photography in the future. So stay tuned!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t always been easy but I’ve never really been the quitting type of guy. The hardest obstacles I faced came from financial disadvantages and, at times, just not being satisfied with my own work. I was always looking for ways to outdo myself but at times, I’d feel limited for lack of equipment. Being a photographer is expensive and I wasn’t always able to afford most of the equipment I wanted when I first started so I had no choice but to work with what I had. In my opinion, I think this made me a better photographer because it put me in positions to where I had to learn to be resourceful with limited equipment. This made me a lot stronger on the technical side of photography, too and it also made me a lot more appreciative of any new equipment I’d get.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a professional photographer under the business name: ROBNSN Photography and I specialize in portraiture, fashion photography, and portfolio building. I am most proud of my diverse portfolio and the connections and relationships I’ve built over my career as a photographer.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success, to me, is defined by the satisfaction of my clientele and the impact I make on the people that I work with. Financially, it’s nice to make money from photography but I weigh my success by the results of my work. There was a point when I wasn’t making money from photography but I was still content and happy to create and just make people feel beautiful and good about themselves. To me, that’s the biggest payoff.
