Thanks for sharing your story with us William. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Fifteen years ago I joined the partnership with Deloitte Consulting. One of the perks of being a Partner at the world’s largest professional services firm was having a hotline access to IT support. Time was money for the partners and ensuring immediate access to IT assistance was paramount. Fast forward, 8 years ago, I left Deloitte and co-founded a small consulting firm, Trenegy. Finding IT help for the cadre of consultants at Trenegy was difficult.
After frustrating cycles through various managed services firms and frazzled independent IT guys, IT support was brought in-house. However, in-house meant my business partner performed the IT support. A business owner doing IT support was a tremendous waste of time and money. The epiphany came, “what if we had an on-demand IT support model for small businesses?”
Then small businesses can get the same level of support only afforded by Big 4 partners at a lower price! This epiphany was the genesis of EVAN. Today, Trenegy and many other firms are getting the IT support they deserve. I serve as the ‘non-IT’ guy co-founder, managing director of Trenegy and advise on all financial, legal and marketing matters.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our biggest struggle was getting the EVAN platform off the ground and up and running in 2017. We assembled an excellent project management and development team. The challenge was getting all of the technology components integrated. The components included remote connectivity, payment services, matching algorithms, phone services and security. This particular combination of technology platforms has never been done before. Therefore, nobody could rely on prior experience to make it all happen.
When it came time to release our MVP in October of 2017, I cannot say we were 100% proud of what we built. It still needed work. For the remainder of 2017, the development team worked furiously, to work out all of the bugs and re-design much of the user interface. Finally, in January 2018, we were ready for prime time. Going through the battle of trying to release an app and balance new user adoption was more difficult than we thought.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Spending time with my grandparents in the North Carolina mountains was something I cherished every summer. From the time we walked down the rolling stairs off the Piedmont airplane landing in Charlotte and had our traditional trip to Bojangles on way home, every moment was wonderful.
The long early walks with my grandfather were times where I learned more about life and how to treat people than anywhere else. My grandmother chose to spoil us following the walks with an “all you can eat’ pound of bacon and grape juice. Breakfast of champions!
