Meet Yolan Yoing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yolan Yoing.

Yolan Yoing

Yolan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always loved poetry and storytelling. I remember back in elementary school when a storyteller came to our class. He told us how storytellers would travel from village to village, telling stories that would be passed down and evolve over time. I’ve been a natural history buff since I was a child. I would create elaborate poems and stories that my English and history teachers would ask me to read aloud in class. I started writing when I was young, but it wasn’t until I was in my late teens that my writing turned into rhymes. That led me back to writing poetry, and I’ve graced many stages and performed for audiences around the country. I’ve also written a book, “The Unknown Child Named Yolan,” and appeared in several plays and films. All of this came from my love of poetry. Poetry saved my life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve had a massive heart attack in 2015, which resulted in congestive heart failure. As a result, I can no longer perform as often as I would like. However, I am still blessed to be able to write again.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an activist, author, poet, and actor. My profession is in the performing arts, and in the spoken word community, I am known as Yolan Apoets Poet. In film and in the community, I am known simply as Yolan Young. I’m an actor, and I’m proud of the recognition I’ve received for my work. A lot of my I never set out to become a poet; it just happened. I’ve been told that what sets me apart from others is my ability to write poems that are either timeless classics or great wordplay with imagery. I speak on topics in my poems in such a way that when you read them, you will always be on the edge of your seat. Credits are listed on IMDb, and I’m especially proud of being recognized for the hard work and dedication that I put in my craft,

What matters most to you?
My family is the reason I fight every day, the reason I work so hard, and the reason I get up on the days it’s hard to do so. They are my why. They are what matters to me the most.
