Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamyirah Bean.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am Supreme Bean. I was dubbed the name over time by my peers. My entrepreneurial journey started my second to last year in the Navy. I was diagnosed with Pseudo Tumor Cerebri and began to experience vision loss. This led me to a shift in mindset, how I got to where I was, and all I’ve been through was for a reason bigger than myself. During this time, I began to teach myself cut & sew, heat press, basic photography. The fact of losing my vision at times was scary but also humbling. It was really the push that drove me to giving back and engaging in community work. I, then living in San Diego, Ca, began to do community events with my church. From there, I started to use my own money to buy food and water for the homeless that led to engaging in their stories. I learned a lot from what society would deem our lessers in the community, but so much knowledge can come from those you least expect. That inspired me to make the most of my sight and learn to use my voice for the voiceless. I began utilizing some of my self taught gifts to give them a bigger experience. I would give clothes & take pictures all while encouraging them with my own testimonies. My best friend Jesse & I created what would be Yovng & Authentik. A family through effort and loyalty. The stories from some of our homeless vets sparked something in me, and from there, I learned that to be youthful was a mindset, to be Authentik was all about how you held on to it. YAA is a family. Those times led me to what I believe was my purpose, and that was bigger than me. From that point forward it is mandatory that I gave what I had and built something for the “Familia.” This brand, would hold no limits, no bounds and give a platform for the overlooked and the Creatives. Throughout my Navy experience, I was known for my non-conventional knowledge and abstract apparel taste. So it was no surprise I would make the most of what I already possessed & ignite the start of my fashion journey and my philanthropic avenues. I would utilize fashion, music & photography to bring awareness to the masses. The youth & my peer group. Yovng & Authentik is a multifaceted brand that builds through traveling, music, fashion culture, and investing in our communities.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been a smooth ride. I started music management, and sometimes you don’t feel the energy reciprocated through all parties. I felt I was giving more than I was receiving in return. I relocated home, Houston Tx, in 2016. After my first event here at the sneaker summit, I was homeless shortly after and had to figure out how to keep going. I continued to give back and just help with promotion in 2017. I promoted with Livehouse for a few months and met a man that would later lead me to a creative director position at Bach Beat Studios. Through my work there I was offered to become an operation manager at Club VIP, better known as Panda Nightclub, Id thank all that saw my potential because these opportunities turned into me having my own radio show, THE FREQUENCY with GMT. It was my first time in many of these positions but homeless and figuring it out as a newly disabled veteran; things weren’t as smooth as I would’ve liked but doing something I loved made the experience worthwhile. Later that year we’d have a hurricane that would take away the club and the Opportunity to continue the radio show. I continued for as long as I could, but I later got into a bad car wreck. I was out of commission for a minute afterwards; however, with the help of some friends, we turned out tragedies into help for our fellow Houstonians. I continued to give what I could though, giving that energy out is what I believe helped me transition into what would later help myself and the brand, to being known as a multifaceted creative agency.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My company creates marketing rollouts for music artist, assist other companies with their business development. Creates Authentik Apparel and travel series inspired photography. We specialize in non-conventional creative ways of development. From the Arts to financial understanding in business. I am most proud of our community outreach and our musical artist platforms. We have also begun our journey with the tech side of entrepreneurial work with our veterans. There is genuinely no limit to what we will develop and curate in Houston. We were initially just an entertainment brand, but I believe what sets us apart is the fact that as a Female, disabled veteran-owned business. Yovng & Authentik has touched many of Houston Creatives from start-ups, to platforms of expressions, real estate investment, technology and artist development. I’m most proud of our continuous growth.
What were you like growing up?
My mom would describe me as fearless. I was always interested in everything, sure of what I wanted and open-minded to learning new things. I was a kid that knew what I would and wouldn’t tolerate. My grandma would say she felt like I was here before. I had much, but I wasn’t able to do everything I was interested in. I was a track runner majority of my childhood and a peer assistant leader in my High school years. I would say I was a popular nobody.
