Meet Yvonne Madueke Akunyili of Avalon Event Rentals

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvonne Madueke Akunyili.

Yvonne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my career as a Field Engineer at Haliburton. Having earned two degrees, a Bachelors in Petroleum Engineering and a Masters in Chemical Engineering, I envisioned my line of work will solely be in the Oil & Gas Industry where I could apply my acquired knowledge to solve various energy problems. Due to the unpredictable nature of the industry and my decision to start a family, I couldn’t travel on short notice for jobs. As a result, I decided to go part time with engineering and follow my passion for décor and event design, which had piqued my interest for a long time.

I got the opportunity to shadow and work with juggernauts in the event industry, which really invigorated me. I also enjoyed planning events for family and friends. After these events, I kept getting amazing reviews and was encouraged, by almost everyone, to pursue my passion for décor and event design full time.

Networking with people within the event industry, I got an opportunity to acquire a rental company and merge it with my existing business and I revamped it to what it is today. Although it has been a struggle understanding how to stay afloat with bigger corporations as competitors, I have been able to create my niche in what is an already saturated industry. I have also continued to improve my company and to set myself apart from other companies.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We face challenges every day. The biggest challenge facing any entrepreneur has to be surrounding yourself with the right staff. It is not easy finding the right people to grow your company while, at the same time, keeping your values as a person and a company.

Avalon Event Rentals is a full-service tent and event rental company. Avalon was formed with the objective of realizing all luxury and bespoke event needs, catering to individuals, brands, and companies.

We are mainly known for our Tents. We offer some of the largest selections of tent rentals in Houston. On top of multiple tent solutions, we also house an impressive catalog of tent décor and draping to set a perfect atmosphere.

We are most proud of our cohesive and collaborative work to come together and integrate seamlessly to produce our client’s vision for any terrain and environment.

What sets us apart from others is the lack of complacency. We are always improving our processes on customer approach. Updating our inventory to keep up with the changing trends. Treating every customer as VIPs no matter how small their event is. Giving excellent customer service and experience.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a bit shy but soon got over my timidity by being exposed to school plays and ballet. I love to dance, sing karaoke and travel. I also have an interest in technology and gadgets, which brings out the engineer in me.

I also love to explore new cultures when I travel. In addition, I enjoy reading a good book and listening to podcasts. I do not shy away from making new friends, who can teach me a lot of wonderful new things.
