Hi Zurays, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am Zurays Khan, founder of Artistry By Zurays and Houston Glam Club, and I am soon launching Beauty Institute by Zurays. I launched Artistry By Zurays on my birthday after pivoting from transformational life coach to beauty artist, bringing the same focus on confidence, storytelling, and calm under pressure to every face I touch. My promise is simple: every woman in my chair should feel like royalty. I am a mom of three and a lifelong learner, so my path has never been linear. It has been disciplined. In the early days I juggled 3 am call times and mom life, and over time the work grew into a luxury brand serving multicultural brides and celebrity clients across Pakistani, Indian, Arab, and American styles.
Houston opened big doors. I have worked with Pakistani celebrities and most recently glammed at the HUM Awards 2025 in Houston. In 2024, my work appeared on a New York billboard during Fashion Week. I am also the official makeup design coach for Smi Nair, Miss India Environment, preparing her for the Miss Environment International pageant. I have created looks for campaigns and features with MAC, Joyalukkas, Vogue LA, Maxim, and Malvie, and now I am honored to be featured by Voyage Houston.
Education is also central to my mission. I mentor artists in both craft and business. I do not throw aspiring artists under the bus because I have been in their shoes. Through my coaching, I help them stand out in a saturated market with skill, professionalism, and kindness.
Today, my signature is camera-ready, culture-honoring beauty: flawless skin, elegant glam, and Hollywood waves, delivered with warmth, precision, and on-time execution. My mission remains to elevate confidence, honor heritage, and make beauty feel effortless. Houston gave me my start. I began as a one-woman mobile artist, and now I am paying it forward by creating opportunities for artists and ensuring every bride sees the most empowered version of herself in the mirror.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth journey, and I learned the beauty business from the ground up while discovering my strengths and weaknesses.
Along the way, some familiar faces grew distant while generous strangers became true supporters, and I built my portfolio through countless unpaid projects as I battled imposter syndrome and camera shyness, learning that talent is not enough without systems, contracts, and boundaries.
Operationally, back-to-back events, last-minute changes, and unexpected delays tested my timelines, while Houston humidity and multicultural ceremonies demanded flawless long-wear results.
I learned to say no when projects did not align, put firm policies in place, secured deposits, and built a respectful client experience supported by discipline, faith, continued education, self-development, and clear systems, timelines, checklists, and AI assistants.
Most importantly, I refuse to throw aspiring artists under the bus, and I coach them to stand out with skill, professionalism, and kindness, and this hard road has shaped me into the artist and educator I am today.

What matters most to me is elevating confidence while honoring culture. Every client should feel seen, celebrated, and at ease, so I prioritize preparation, clear timelines, and calm under pressure. Integrity comes first because trust lets clients and fellow artists breathe and be fully present. Education and community matter just as much; I strongly believe in working to build a supportive community, refuse to throw aspiring artists under the bus, and coach them to outshine with skill and kindness, just as a few God sent mentors helped me in my early days. As a mom of three and a former transformational life coach, I have seen how confidence can change a life, and that is the legacy I want my brand to leave.
