Mont’sha Burrell of New York on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Mont’sha Burrell shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Mont’sha, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I’m being called to fully step into the woman God created me to be—bold, grounded, and aligned with purpose. For a long time, I was afraid to surrender, to really let go and trust that I didn’t have to carry everything on my own. But now, I’m in a season of deepening my relationship with God and learning to move with more faith than fear.

I used to second-guess myself, dim my light, or play small out of fear of being misunderstood or not measuring up. But lately, I’ve felt a divine nudge to speak up, show up, and pour into others—not just through my business and creative work, but through my voice, my story, and the lessons that come from living in alignment with truth.

I’m embracing spiritual discipline, letting God lead, and trusting that what’s meant for me doesn’t require force—just faith, obedience, and consistency. It’s not always easy, but it’s real. And that’s what I’m walking in now.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Mont’sha Burrell, and I’m the founder of Milli Cleanse—a natural skincare brand rooted in healing, intention, and authenticity. What started as a personal journey to care for my own skin has grown into a full-circle mission to help others reconnect with theirs—gently, holistically, and with love.

Every product I create is handmade and inspired by nature, but more importantly, it’s backed by purpose. My brand is for people who want clean, effective skincare without compromising their values or their peace. Whether it’s sensitive skin, acne, hyperpigmentation, or just the need for a little more self-care, I created Milli Cleanse to meet those needs naturally.

What makes my work unique is the heart behind it. I’m not just selling skincare—I’m building a deeper connection with my audience, helping people embrace their bare face, their natural beauty, and their personal healing. I’m also working on expanding into wellness for postpartum care and more, because I believe healing is layered and I want to support it at every stage.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I believed that being sensitive made me weak. That speaking up was too much. That I had to shrink myself or act out just to be heard. I was labeled as troublesome at times, misunderstood—even by myself. I thought there was something wrong with feeling deeply or moving differently from others.

Now I know that my sensitivity is my strength—it’s what allows me to create with intention, connect with my audience on a real level, and build a brand that’s rooted in emotion and authenticity. As a business owner, it’s not just about selling a product—it’s about impact, feeling, and purpose. And it turns out, those “soft” parts of me are exactly what made Milli Cleanse what it is today.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Plenty of times. There were moments when the weight of doubt, exhaustion, and uncertainty felt overwhelming. But something inside me kept holding on—a quiet, steady voice reminding me that this is my passion, my calling.

I knew that if I gave up on this—the thing I truly love and believe in—I would never be able to create that same magic again. So even when it felt hard, I chose to keep moving forward, trusting that the journey was bigger than the obstacles. That’s what keeps me going.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That more products mean better skin. That you need harsh chemicals to see real results. That beauty has to look a certain way, fit a certain mold, or be filtered and flawless.

The skincare industry often sells insecurity dressed up as luxury. It pushes routines that disconnect people from their own skin, their intuition, and their natural beauty. But the truth is—real skincare is simple, honest, and personal. It’s not about covering up flaws, it’s about caring for what’s real.

At Milli Cleanse, I focus on healing over hiding, intention over trends, and connection over consumption. Because skin doesn’t need to be “fixed”, it needs to be understood.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I think some people might see my work and only focus on the surface like it’s just skincare or just content. But what I’ve really been building is a space for healing. A soft place for people to return to themselves, to care for their bodies, their skin, and their spirit in a world that constantly pulls them away from that.

People might not always realize how much heart, prayer, and inner work went into everything I created. My legacy isn’t just about what I made, it’s about how I made people feel, what I helped them remember about themselves, and the quiet strength I chose to lead with even when no one was watching.
