Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandria Robinson.
Alexandria, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up watching my grandmother live the most glamorous lifestyle. She was mostly a nail tech but did makeup on the side as well. I was fascinated with her and her work so much that I would always ask questions and pick her brain about the beauty industry.
That evolved into me practicing makeup looks in my room every night for about 3 years straight. One day I came across a video of a makeup artist showing her viewers a day in her work life and that was the moment I realized I could take makeup from a “side gig”/hobby and turn it into a career.
Seven years later, this has been the best, most rewarding decision I’ve ever made.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My biggest struggle has always been stagnancy. Starting my makeup career in Akron, Ohio, I felt like there was only so much room for me to grow (and that wasn’t much). I struggled with questioning my journey, wondering if I would ever make it as a full-time makeup artist and not have to rely so heavily on part-time jobs to make ends meet.
Not having a consistent clientele after 5 years definitely left me feeling inadequate and that is ultimately what pushed me to make the move to Houston. I knew being in a bigger city would give me access to more opportunities, more clients, and also challenge me to improve my skills in order to keep up with all of the amazing artists in the city.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I feel like I thrive the most when doing natural and editorial makeup. I love making my clients feel beautiful by enhancing their natural features rather than covering them up completely. With editorial makeup, I am able to express myself in the most artistic way. These are the looks where I completely allow myself to drift into “the zone” and add elements in layers until I am completely satisfied with the outcome.
One of my editorial looks recently got published in a magazine and that was definitely my most proud moment. That was the moment where I felt like all of my hard work, years of experience, and move to Houston were all worth it. I try not to compare myself to other artists, but based on my client’s opinions, I make everyone feel like we’re friends and family.
It’s so much deeper than just makeup to me. I love meeting my clients and forming lifelong connections with them.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
God has a way of putting me in connection with the most genuine, like-minded creatives. I can’t narrow my experiences down to just one lucky moment, I have been blessed with countless meaningful moments.
