Rising Stars: Meet Allison Craig

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Craig.

Allison Craig

Allison, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I wasn’t always the one behind the camera, and pursuing photography professionally wasn’t initially on my radar. After completing my nursing undergraduate studies at Baylor University and earning my nursing degree from UMHB, I embarked on a fulfilling six-year career as a Labor & Delivery nurse at a local hospital in Houston. Working with mothers during such a significant moment in their lives was incredibly rewarding. However, I gradually realized that nursing wasn’t my true calling.

In 2010, following the birth of my first son, I found myself drawn to photography. Though my early attempts were far from perfect, a disappointing experience with my own son’s newborn and first-year photos ignited a vision. I imagined a photography experience tailored specifically for moms like me—one where everything, from wardrobe to hair and makeup, location, and timing, was expertly managed, leaving the mothers free to simply enjoy the moment.

In 2012, I took the leap and launched my photography business. The initial years were dedicated to honing my craft, refining my skills, and establishing a reputation for providing clients with a beautiful, luxury experience. Fast forward almost twelve years, and my studio, now located in The Heights, has become a staple in Houston’s family photography scene. Our team is renowned for delivering a relaxed yet upscale experience that families eagerly anticipate—a day where all they need to do is show up and enjoy their time together in front of our cameras.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Running a small business is often a bumpy journey, filled with challenges inherent to entrepreneurship. I quickly discovered that while photography itself was just one aspect of the business, mastering all the other roles and responsibilities was the real challenge. Juggling marketing, branding, bookkeeping, and various operational tasks alongside the creative process proved to be demanding, especially for someone like me who had never taken a business course.

Transitioning to a mindset that balanced both the creative and business aspects was daunting yet essential for long-term success. Embracing this shift allowed me to ensure the sustainability of my business. It involved learning to delegate, establishing clear boundaries, becoming comfortable with declining opportunities that weren’t the right fit, and mastering time management. Though these adjustments were tough, they ultimately proved crucial in transforming my business from surviving to thriving.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

Plus, we’ve got your wardrobe covered, with over 200 dresses ranging from sizes 0-24 for moms, kid-sized outfits from 0-14, and shirts for dads in sizes small to XXL.

Our experience doesn’t stop at just photography. Our talented hair and makeup artists can meet you at home or in the studio. We’ve also teamed up with a local bakery for delicious smash cakes, and we work with a nearby pet care business so your OG fur babies can join in the fun.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
To be transparent and blunt, there are so many photographers who are currently claiming to be an educator. It’s very important to ask them the hard questions to ensure they are a good fit and are actually walking the walk. Ask them how long they’ve been in business, how much money they are making from their portrait business, how many sessions they are doing per year, and how much money they are making from education. This will help you discern if it’s a right fit.

You can also visit websites like Heart for Creatives, who specialize in vetting photographers and ensuring that what they are offering as educators is legitimate and not just making them money.
