Rising Stars: Meet Alyssa Young of Clear Lake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Young.

Hi Alyssa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Funny story, growing up I originally always thought I’d be a veterinarian. One day one of my close friends in high school told me she was signing up for the cosmetology program, and that I should too. I cut my own hair, as well as others, so thought maybe it’d be fun to actually learn more about it. Once I graduated high school, I received my license for cosmetology and have been doing hair professionally ever since. I’ve worked in salons over the years, but after a while I felt like I hit my ceiling and was just sort of coasting. I was successful, but not in the way I wanted to be. Now nearly 15 years later I’m renting space from “Evolutionaire Salons”, and completely working for myself. Everything has become completely personalized with creating my own small business. My clients love it, and I couldn’t be happier. I made the right choice and look forward to what’s to come for my future in this profession.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
So far, pretty smooth. My only struggles are with what it takes to create and maintain a small business. Meaning; permits, licenses, fees, insurance, taxes, etc. It’s all a bit overwhelming at first.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a hairstylist. Although I do have my favorites, I don’t necessarily “specialize” in anything in particular. I have a pretty wide range of clientele and sort of do it all. My favorites services are blonding, vivid colors, short haircuts, and event/formal styling. I believe what sets me apart from others is the way I treat my clientele. By that I mean I just want them to feel completely comfortable with me in every way. Hair is a big deal, and can make or break someone’s confidence. If they aren’t completely happy with my service, the products I use, the environment… etc, I will do my absolute best to accommodate.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Oh my goodness, so many! If I had to narrow it down I’d have to say my clients. The ones that started with me in the beginning, the ones in between, and the wonderful clients that are still with me today. At the end of the day it’s a business and they are my income, but so many of them really feel like family. Each hair appointment is either a gossip session with lots of laughter, some tears, or life lessons. Most recently, I’d have to say my biggest supporter is my husband. He encouraged me to go out on my own. It was a risky decision, but he didn’t seem nervous at all. He had total faith in me, and still does.
