Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Borjas.
Hi Anthony, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was a child, I was in painting classes, and it was here that my interest in art was born; I remember that my biggest admirer was my mother; she kept each one of my paintings and was always there to applaud me, I developed a skill with my hands, and I liked the art I could create, that’s when I wanted to take my art to another level, and I started playing with my mom’s makeup on the sly, I put my makeup on and took it off immediately before she knew, the secret came out, and I told her that I liked to put on makeup, I remember that she supported me and bought me my first makeup palettes so that I could practice.
At the age of 16, I took my first professional makeup class, I was literally a child, but I knew I would go a long way; I decided to take more and more classes until I certified myself as a professional makeup artist, success began to arrive, and I had my first clients little by little, they spread the word that there was a new makeup artist in the city and more clients began to arrive.
At the age of 19, I began to study a master’s degree in makeup, and this is where the story takes an incredible turn; I began to work for famous people, beauty queens, celebrities, and singers.
Currently, I continue with my dream of going very far, and I am working very hard to be more than yesterday and I will not stop until I achieve it because I know that I was born to be a successful person.
I am currently specialized in bridal and quinceañera makeup and hairstyles.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I heard very hurtful comments from my own family where they made fun of me because I liked makeup; they said that I looked like a clown with my face painted and that makeup was not for men, but I did not allow that to affect me, and I continued with my dream of being a makeup artist.
I can’t say that the road has been easy. I have had many mistakes that have made me learn and have left me an important lesson in life, I have always believed that we are beings in constant learning, and every day we learn something new; I remember a lot of a teacher I had in high school she always told me that you stop learning until the last day before your death.
I have had to overcome several obstacles, deal with envious people who do not want to see you grow, I have had to endure colleagues in the same field who do not allow you to move forward, but I have known how to attract good things into my life.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I studied marketing at the university, I have always liked business, and I knew that I needed to learn more in order to grow as a professional.
I decided to study marketing because it is a career that will have many doors for you since it is super versatile and you learn a little of everything; I love to keep learning new things about business and business development strategies to grow my business and guide people who want to get ahead.
I currently teach classes as a professional makeup artist, I train other people to learn the right path in the world of makeup, and I encourage them to be better every day; I love to see my students with that desire to learn new things, and they remind me so much of when I started in this world of beauty.
Investing in myself has always been one of the best moves I have made in my life; preparing for the future is the best thing I can do, and for that, I love learning new things every day; I really enjoy reading, I love having conversations with older people who share their experiences and help me have another vision of life.
I thank my mother, who is my main engine and the greatest treasure I have in life; thanks to her, I was able to go to university, and I am very proud to be the son of a Mexican woman who struggles a lot to get ahead.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Never settle, always go for more, show yourself that you can go far, fight for your dreams, and you will realize that all the power and strength you need to achieve them is within you.
I remember a lot once, I was assaulted on the street with a gun, and I lost absolutely everything; they took away my work equipment, my computer, my wallet, and I was left with nothing, but it was there that I took strength to move forward and work even harder to get ahead and have more work to replace the things that had been stolen from me.
I understood that there are moments in life that make us stronger and teach us life lessons that change our mentality; there will always be a solution for everything; you don’t have to be afraid; at the end of the day, you will always find the way out.
