Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Aniekwu.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started a modeling career and became a well-known creative in the African community in Houston. I made a name for myself and took my brand to the next level – created an Ankara fashion brand! EdgyAndEthnic is the name of my business and we sell Ankara (African print) purses and swimsuits. They are made in different parts of Africa and brought here to be sold. So any purchase that is made goes back to helping them at home. I am also a social media manager/creative consultant – which basically means I help creatives grow their brand, monetize their crafts and also manage social media pages for clients or small businesses who wish to have a sophisticated look and expand their reach.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road at first, especially when everyone looks down or laughs at your work because they think it won’t work, criticizes you for every little thing you do or just doesn’t wish you well, lol. It has been God watching my steps and putting things in place for me. It definitely took a significant level of determination and understanding that you can’t please everyone to be where I am now. Nothing good in life comes easy so I embrace the struggles effortlessly.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Nigerian influencer and model based in Houston. I have come to be known as an expressive and confident model through my style, video edits and persona in general. I have been in music videos and different blog pages because of my unique style in the industry. I like to call myself a conservative rule breaker because as much as I like to break barriers and norms, I still have my principles that I can’t break. I have worked with different wonderful photographers that have shared their knowledge with me and have also helped me see the value in the art that I do.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
My number 1 app that has made my video edits come to life is Inshot! I don’t know what I’d do without her, lol. I also use Canva for my business content – it has been a huge help.
