Rising Stars: Meet Austin Gaston of Galveston, Texas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Gaston.

Austin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?

My name is Austin Gaston, a Texas singer/songwriter who officially moved to Galveston in 2021. Started songwriting in high school and has pursued a career in music ever since. Living in (Bryan/College Station TX) for years after graduation I would perform on the open mic circuits trying to perfect my craft. Gaining the confidence I needed, I continued to be a featured solo artist to numerous acts/productions/festivals across the state, Needing a change of pace, my family with all their support helped me move to the island hoping I could make a difference out here. Galveston however is truly one of a kind, a special place with close local community and spectacular art made by talented artists. Ever since moving to Galveston I feel loved, respected, and apart of something I always wanted with people who believe in me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No not all smooth, it has been a journey filled with trials and tribulations for sure. Things that made me question myself for years, holding me back from doing what I just wanted to do in the first place. Most of it was just mainly me creating mental blocks for myself with vices, thus keeping me from truly acknowledging the people that were initially trying to help, the ones who believed in me in the first place. But I’m still learning to get better.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
All though I’ve had many different jobs, my main occupation to this day is being a professional musician. I’m a singer/songwriter already so I figured why not do what I already do professionally. I go around and entertain as many people as I can, mostly with songs that I write which is really special and different for me and most.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
When you find the groups or individuals that inspire your creativity it’s more motivation then mentorship. Mentorship is more like someone taking the wheel from you and showing how to speed through traffic without hitting anyone. In my case my overall mentor who showed me how to be independent and true to my craft without compromise is one of my best friends. Finding someone like them is very hard it takes some time but it’s not impossible you just have to go out there and meet people.
