Hi Avery, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Avery and the crew at Stubborn Anchor Studios worked together in the tattoo and piercing industry. As women and members of the LGBTQ community, we noticed there was a lack of safe spaces for us to be authentic and to empower others through body modification. In 2024, we set out to open our own studio where we are able to provide clean, high quality services for our community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been smooth. We have had to adjust to the demands of running a small business, while also navigating being a woman in the body modification industry. Despite these challenges, we have carved out a spot in the industry and the community has shown up for us. We recently raised over $2,000 for Tony’s Place Houston, and they have connected us with other resources in Houston.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a tattoo and piercing studio, we have an artist for every style, with more than 20 years of experience combined. We pride ourselves on being flexible and working with the client to achieve their dream body modifications. We are entirely women-owned and queer operated. Our piercers specialize in gender affirming piercings. We’re known for our homey atmosphere and bring a feminine touch to the industry.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
That we’re Swifties. Just kidding – everyone knows that as soon as they see the art on our walls. We also double as therapists (for legal reasons, this is a joke).
