Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandy Chu
Hi brandy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began my career in 2009 as an apprentice at a high-end salon, where I honed my technical skills and built a loyal clientele. A few years in, I noticed a gap in the industry—many of my short-haired clients had to visit barbershops for fades but returned to me for precision scissor work because few professionals could seamlessly execute both.
Recognizing this void, my business partner and I traveled extensively, drawing inspiration from pioneering barbershops like Fellow Barber, The Blind Barber, and Frank’s Chop Shop. These spaces redefined what a modern barbershop could be—blending craftsmanship with a professional, elevated experience. Motivated to bring that same innovation to Houston, we opened our first Cutthroat Barbers location on Washington Avenue in 2013.
Beyond perfecting the craft, I was determined to elevate barbering from a low-paying trade to a respected career. At the time, most barbershops operated on a walk-in model with pricing that hadn’t kept pace with inflation. We introduced an appointment-based system, similar to high-end salons, and raised haircut prices to reflect the value of our service. Initially, some potential clients balked at our $35 pricing, but I knew that once they experienced our quality, they would return. That confidence paid off—today, Cutthroat Barbers has expanded to three thriving locations with over 30 employees, offering profit-sharing, education, and healthcare benefits while continuing to push the industry forward.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In 2015, I was diagnosed with cancer and underwent two brain surgeries, leaving me partially paralyzed on my left side. I had to relearn how to cut hair, relying on my team to sustain and grow the business.
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced long-term closures, creating financial uncertainty for barbershops everywhere. Just as we were rebuilding, my business partner moved out of state in 2021, leaving me to run all locations on my own.
Each of these challenges pushed me to adapt, trust my team, and find new ways to scale the business despite the obstacles.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Cutthroat Barbers, we deliver upscale barbering services with a focus on precision, hospitality, and an elevated client experience. Our barbers specialize in high-quality haircuts, fades, and styling, combining the artistry of classic techniques with modern trends.
What truly sets us apart is our commitment to redefining barbering as a respected, long-term career rather than just a job. We provide stability, career growth, and new opportunities for barbers through education, mentorship, and industry-leading benefits. We’ve built a space that blends the professionalism of a high-end salon with the authenticity of a traditional barbershop, creating a community-driven environment where both clients and barbers feel valued.
We’re most proud of the culture we’ve built—one that prioritizes connection, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement. Our vision is to keep pushing the industry forward, ensuring barbers have the tools, training, and support to thrive.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The barbershop has always been a hub for human connection, and as AI continues to reshape industries, I believe hands-on professions like barbering will become even more valued. People will seek deeper, more meaningful interactions, and the barbershop will remain one of the last spaces where genuine conversation and community thrive.
Looking ahead, I see three major industry shifts:
A Surge in Education & Skill Development – More barbers will invest in advanced training, including color and chemical services, to expand their offerings and increase their earning potential.
A Growing Demand for Barbering Schools – As more young professionals choose barbering as a career, the need for high-quality training programs and apprenticeships will skyrocket.
The Continued Blending of Barbering & Salon Services – The gap between barbershops and salons will continue to close, allowing skilled professionals to offer a full spectrum of grooming services.
Ultimately, I believe barbering will evolve into a more respected, sustainable career path—one where professionals can build long-term success, work for themselves, and enjoy the same financial stability as other skilled trades.
