Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Batten.
Hi Brian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been in residential sales and construction for the past 20 years. Over the past 11 years, I worked for a top 10 builder as a Division President. I ran operations for 9 different regions across the southeast United States. During the past two years, several opportunities came up to buy or take over several companies. One of those opportunities was a roofing company.
After a great deal of research, I saw how much opportunity there was in the roofing industry. I believed there was a lack of integrity and true customer focus in roofing. So, I resigned from my position on December 1st, 2022 (3 months shy of receiving a substantial stock vest). I took the month of December to prepare to open our doors on January 1.
On January 1, Roof Zero came to life. We immediately started getting referrals, built our social media followings, knocked on doors, and met everyone we could share our story. Customers have been amazing. We have received incredible feedback about our process, communication, and quality of work.
I put everything I had on the line to make this company not only work but be something incredibly special. I believe we are on the road to making history in the roofing space.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In our short time, it has not been a smooth road. Some days I wake up and we have NOTHING going on. On other days I wake up to the phone ringing and can’t handle all the leads coming in.
I also went from being a high-level executive at a top 10 builder to being everything from an admin to a laborer. It has been a shift, but each month it gets better and better.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We are a roofing contractor focusing on affordable quality work done efficiently. We train in communication and giving customers clear realistic expectations.
There are so many roofing contractors out there promising the world and breaking every law out there. We are clear on insurance jobs, customers have to pay their deductible. Many roofing companies promise they will not have to pay just to get the business. We would rather do things ethically and professionally than take those shortcuts.
We overcommunicate with customers, we meet adjusters on site, and handle the whole process of insurance and take that burden off the homeowner. We walk the customer through the whole process and explain what will happen along the way.
The feedback has been great.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
We aren’t shy about who we are and what we do. We have wrapped vehicles.
We post on social media several times a week. We have our crews and staff in Roof Zero shirts. We do not want to be the best-kept secret. If you do great work, shout it from the mountain tops!
