Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittaney Penney.
Brittaney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I first began my photography journey way back in 2004 when I would borrow my dad’s point-and-shoot-style camera and take photos around my grandparent’s house. I dabbled in nature photography and self-portraits at that time and from there my love of photography flourished. I started working in music photography in 2011 when I would take my camera into local small venues and take photos of local bands. Having no idea that this could be a career, I stuck with photographing local bands and worked with a few small publications as a freelancer.
After moving away from The Woodlands and over to Lake Jackson, TX in 2016, I began working with the local newspaper, The Facts, and started honing in on my photojournalist/storytelling skills. During the recent pandemic, I joined The Honey POP as a photographer and rapidly grew into the Director of Photography + Digital Media/Lead Photographer role.
I moved back to Houston in 2021 and have been working as a Creative Content Manager on a marketing team as my full-time job, working with The Honey POP, and also doing some freelance photography work on the side.
Alongside my love for photography, I also do a lot of design. I help create social media graphics and templates, printed marketing materials, and even merch. I recently got my certification in UX Design from Thinkful and have been loving diving into the world of apps and website design.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have definitely been struggles along the way. Photography is not an easy path and it’s not for everyone. The most recent struggle that I think everyone has faced in some way or another has been the pandemic. Photography, specifically portrait or music photography, is all about people and it’s very hard to do when the world has shut down. But going through that experience has only lit a fire under me in wanting to get back and utilize some of the new skills I have worked on.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a creative by nature and photography and design are my passions. My specialties are music photography, portraits, social media graphics, and content creation. I’m incredibly proud of being part of The Honey POP team and emulating our mission statement of creating positive pop culture content for fans, by fans. Working with companies and brands and helping them realize their potential and the power of fandom is something I am very passionate about.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I love being able to utilize my skills to help others reach their full potential. If you need a hype person in your life (while also being realistic), I’m your girl.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
During the pandemic, I learned the value of my time and energy. Before the pandemic, I was a work-a-holic, but now I take more initiative to take time off and relax. I also learned the most important lesson that you need to take time to build relationships with your friends and family. Those relationships are key and take work to keep up with.
