Today we’d like to introduce you to Caren Chellgren.
Hi Caren, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After graduating from Kansas State University School of Veterinary Medicine, I moved to Texas for an internship at a busy equine hospital. After 3 years there, I decided to open my own practice. Horse and Hound Mobile Veterinary Services opened in August of 2018. It started as just equine medicine, but has grown to a mixed animal practice. We service horses, dogs, cats, pigs, goats, and many more species.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning a business has been a huge challenge. I didn’t have any business experience prior, so I learned along the way with the help of friends and colleagues. The early mornings, the late nights, the weekend emergencies all taught me discipline and hard work. I wouldn’t be here without my incredible friends and clients.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a mobile mixed animal veterinarian. It is getting harder and harder to find veterinarians who are mobile. There are quite a few out there who work specifically on horses, but it’s very rare to find someone who is mobile and works on species like pigs and goats. One part of my practice that I am extremely proud of is offering in home euthanasia services for dogs and cats. There are some practices who do this within the Houston metro area, but it’s hard for people in rural areas to find someone who will come to them. Although it is a heartbreaking part of my work, it is truly the most rewarding because I get to help people in the hardest parts of their lives make one of the most difficult decisions and make it peaceful for everyone involved.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
My entire business was a risk. I had no idea what I was doing and I didn’t have the client base to start a fully functional business at first. It was a financial and professional risk, but it was worth it in the end. I have grown this business into something that I am truly proud of and have a great list of clientele who trust me to take care of their animals.
This entire profession has risks in it. You have to make life and death decisions, sometimes within seconds. And people are counting on you to be able to perform. You truly have to love this profession.
