Rising Stars: Meet Cindy La and Chris Ly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy La and Chris Ly.

Hi Cindy and Chris, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Cindy: It all started in 2018, when our mutual friend gave us the encouragement to start a foodie Instagram page.

We’re definitely not expert food critics, but we often ate out when we started dating, so our friends began to ask us for food recs. We thought this would be a great idea to share our honest opinions and experiences when we tried out new places on our bucket list. It would also be a nice intimate diary page of all our food dates to look back on. Chris: When we first started dating, I was still getting to know Cindy, and I quickly realized she had never tried most of the restaurants around town before. That was when I smoothly suggested that we create a bucket list of places to check off together on our weekly dates.

We were thinking of the perfect Instagram handle, when Chris thought of @cl2foodies. The reason for that is most of our mutual friends called us “CL Squared” since we both have the same initials. And we both love the kpop star CL. Shout out to CL!

Chris: How we got to where we are today? We’re not really experts at food or anything like that, we just love exploring and trying new places. Cindy was actually the driving force behind getting our foodie page up and running to how it is today.

Cindy: We are truly grateful for all of our amazing friends and family that support our page and encourage us to keep sharing.

Chris: And all of the delicious food!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Cindy: It definitely got pretty rough to consistently post when I entered pharmacy school. My social/school balance was a new challenge for me to take on, so our foodie page took a hiatus for a while. However, recently I decided to take a career change towards a more creative field, and with it came inspiration to revive the foodie page with Chris. It’s truly enjoyable to be able to come up with creative ways to capture a moment and share our experience with other foodies.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We try our best to showcase our food in the most aesthetic way possible, while including our most honest opinions on each place. We want to be able to show off all the hidden gems and new openings to both visitors and locals to this amazing city. There’s definitely a lot of amazing foodies in Houston, and we feel so inspired and proud that our city is being shared through so many creative perspectives. Our page is composed of an intimate community of support, and shared love for food and aesthetics!
