Rising Stars: Meet CONNR

Today we’d like to introduce you to CONNR.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up near Memphis, Tennessee, I was surrounded by great music. I was hooked on melody before I could speak and sang everywhere I went. When I was eight years old, my mom put me into piano lessons, and honestly, I hated it. However, I stuck with it and took lessons for six years before I finally quit. I didn’t play piano for almost a year after that, but one day I sat down and decided to learn some cover songs. Combined with the experience of stupid boys disappointing me, the realization hit me that all I needed was a chord progression and I could say whatever I wanted over it. I quickly discovered that I LOVE writing songs.

My love of songwriting led me to Loyola University New Orleans, where I studied Popular and Commercial Music and continued to hone my craft through music industry studies and performance classes. I loved writing songs and helping other artists translate their experiences, but I never imagined releasing music myself. However, all that changed when I interned at Fame Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. With the collaborators I met at Fame, I began to see myself as an artist as my songs reached a new level of authenticity.

After I graduated from college, I moved to the Shoals to work with my close collaborators Noah Shell, Spencer Coats, and Brad Kuhn. We’ve spent almost two years preparing for the debut of my EP, but I can honestly say that the time taken was well worth it. I couldn’t be more excited to start sharing these songs in the fall of 2021!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My parents were always very supportive of my love for music, so they provided me with a lot of opportunities to learn about my craft and experience new things. The hardest moments were when I questioned the sustainability of being a creative (songwriter, artist). However, I could never bring myself to let it go, so I eventually stopped caring about the practicality of my career choices and chose to be all in. No more wondering if it’ll work out. I’m going to make it work.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a pop/rock artist, singer, songwriter, performer, and pianist. As I have been preparing to release my debut project, I have also been working in recording studios tracking demos and background vocals for other people. I am always writing songs either for myself or other artists, and I am also learning how to produce tracks.

I believe what sets me apart from others is my love for the song. I always strive to incorporate real emotions and experiences in my songs. I want to create music that is culturally impactful and stands the test of time.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
My favorite animals are goats! For some reason, I love that they are jerks and have quirky movements and personalities. I can’t help but get stupid happy when I see them.
