Today we’d like to introduce you to Conscious Lee
Hi Conscious, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started taking my work, advocacy and business more seriously on social media two weeks after my daughter was born in June 2016. At the time, I was a public speaker and facilitator on the side while being a professor and Assistant Debate Coach at the University of Oklahoma. I began posting clips of my workshops, public engagements, and think-piece-like content on education, politics, and pop culture. Using my debate portable skills and expertise gained from My Masters Degrees in Human Relations and Masters in Adult Higher Education I made 100’s of videos gaining engagement and followers. Through a blend of humor, academic theories, philosophical viewpoints, historical knowledge, and personal experiences, I offered insightful critiques and perspectives on the evolving landscape of politics, pop culture, and emerging online identities.
Since then, I’ve built a dedicated, engaged audience of over 4 million followers across TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. My work was recognized with a 2022 YouTube Content Creator Choice Award. That same year, I was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Social Media Personality and was selected for the second creator class of YouTube’s Black Voices Fund. My values and analysis have garnered millions of views and have been featured in Rolling Stone, Forbes, Essence, The Washington Post, Al Jazeera, The Atlantic, Business Insider, and The New York Times. In addition to serving on the Content Advisory Board for The Fanbase App, I’ve partnered with organizations like Google, YouTube, TikTok, BET, the NAACP, and many others.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Struggles of conducting a online business comes with the ups and downs of being on the internet. The low views, low engagement and content suppression impacts reach and circulation. This creates obstacles in amplifying important efforts around education, politics and social issues along with how much my services are being sought out. Sometimes the internet, mainstream media and businesses want to learn about diversity, equity, inclusion and lifting up Black entrepreneurs and other times its the opposite. Sometimes your the beloved influencer online and sometimes the backlash or criticisms makes you public enemy number 1. Obstacles and challenges are both structural components of my work.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a first-generation college graduate from Bryan/College Station, Texas, I’ve witnessed and experienced a lot in life, and those experiences have shaped my unique perspective as an educator, content creator, and public speaker. With a Bachelor’s degree in African/African American Studies and two Master’s degrees—one in Adult Higher Education and another in Human Relations—I bring a wealth of academic expertise and real-world insight to my work. My background as a former College Policy Hall of Fame debater has equipped me with portable skills in research, policy analysis, and argumentation, allowing me to stand out as both an educator and a creative on social media.
Through a blend of humor, academic theories, philosophical viewpoints, historical knowledge, and personal experiences, I tackle complex issues in my facilitations, keynotes, and virtual content. Whether I’m discussing politics, pop culture, or emerging online identities, I offer insightful critiques and perspectives that resonate with diverse audiences. My experience as a college professor and high school teacher gives me a depth of understanding and perspective that many others on the internet lack, enabling me to connect with people on a deeper level.
My academic background in African/African American Studies and Human Relations allows me to specialize in creating content that explores human behavior, relationships, and institutional dynamics. I’m passionate about using my platform to educate, elevate, and inspire transformation. My approach to teaching and consulting is blending entertainment with education to make complex topics accessible and engaging. My motto, “Education is Elevation,” drives everything I do, from my social media content to my speaking engagements and workshops.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I could write a book about how much luck you need to build a online presence. Consistency, creativity and alot of luck is needed to go viral on social media.
