Today we’d like to introduce you to Craig Eubanks.
Hi Craig, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started learning my trade in 1993 at the age of 15 working for my father’s construction business in Savannah, Georgia. We specialized in old/historic homes in Savannah and surrounding areas. I learned the finer craft of restoration which has helped with the older homes here in Galveston, Texas. My wife and I started Liv Third Coast Construction and Design as a reimagining of my father’s business in Galveston in 2019. We have grown quickly, mostly through word of mouth and repeat clients. We offer very high-quality remodels at very affordable costs. All of our trades have been with us for years and I am personally involved with every single project from start to end. My wife has an incredible eye for design and a great understanding of clients’ needs and desires. We offer a finished product unparallelled here on the island. We are available for residential or commercial projects, and we handle everything from the top of the roof to the bottom of the foundation. We can help with small projects, large remodels and new home builds.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t know of a smooth road in life if you are dedicated to doing things the right way. We have had our share of bad sub-contractors that we have had to remove from projects and bring better trades in to fix any issues. This is a costly learning curve and often pushes people out of the business if they cannot assume the expenses and quickly make the right corrections. Luckily, we have not experienced this in a long time and the trades we work with now are heavily vetted and reliable.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have a strong art background, and my wife has a marketing and design background. Together we are able to help clients achieve the look and feel they desire even when they are unable to articulate that for themselves. Every project for us is exciting. It’s a blank canvas we get to create and do so by following the client’s needs and desired look for the space we are reinventing. I logistically design all of our projects to ensure fit and function and my wife, Bree, come in behind me to add the finishing touches that make every project unique.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I would tell people new to the business to make sure they can physically do everything they are asking their crews to perform. You need to know the trade, the tools and the process of building. You need to be ready and willing to step in and take over or show your crew exactly what you want. You need to be ready to cut profits at a moment’s notice to make sure a job is done correctly. The money you lose now to make it right will come back one hundred-fold in client appreciation and referrals.
I wish I knew to be nicer to my crews in the beginning. I always wanted to push people and sometimes that was beyond their capabilities. I let the frustration get the better of me in the beginning. Now, I take more time to assess each person. I give them smaller tasks in the beginning and increase as they show their potential. If it doesn’t work out, I do not get upset. I either reduce the workload for that crew or that person, or I move on to a better option. I am extremely kind and caring to everyone on my jobsites as they are the reason I can do what I do. I never yell and I never get upset. I do my best to communicate early, be on each jobsite regularly to ensure that communication stays clear and I constant reward good work with lunches and gift cards.
