Today we’d like to introduce you to Davo Tha CEO.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Mannnee Hold Up! I just want to Thank God and Voyage Houston Magazine for the opportunity to tell my story!
I am a native Houstonian! Born and raised in Houston, Texas! The Southside to be exact! I’ve always had a love for music, art, and entertainment overall in general. Growing up my parents were very influential with my experiences with music. My father is a writer and wordsmith with a keen ear for music as well. He listens to everything, and I mean everything! I remember growing up and taking rides with him listening to everything from Lenny Kravitz, The Police, Earth Wind and Fire, all the way down to Run DMC and Public Enemy. My mother was a singer and a mastermind who also has a keen ear for music. I remember growing up and listening to Commissioned, Trin-i-tee 5:7, Karen Clark Sheard, all the way down to Brandy, J-Lo, Mary J. Blige and the list goes on. We would watch a lot of award shows, music videos, documentaries, and other fun programs together! My family was a big part of me starting on my musical journey, My parents got me my first official microphone and I haven’t looked back since!
When I was in elementary school, I was in the choir for a while and eventually, when I got to middle school, I joined the band. My instrument of choice was the trombone. My brother also joined the band after I joined and his instrument of choice was the tuba. I stayed in band all throughout my middle school years and once I got to high school I tried my hand at sports (Football) for a while and with so much drama within the team, I ended up leaving that alone and getting back into music. The group of friends I was around at the time were also getting into music and eventually lead me to find my voice. I started writing poems about how I viewed the world, things going on in my surroundings and what was just going on with me at the time. I always liked writing to get my thoughts and feelings out. Eventually, that translated into writing songs and just playing around with words. I always would freestyle in my head when I was younger but as I grew, I found my way with translating my thoughts to paper and then finding my way on the microphone. I used to be nervous of what people would think but I didn’t let that stop me. When I started recording myself, it was weird hearing my voice but cool at the same time. Once I started making songs and recording them, I started showing people and the response I received to my music was mind-blowing. I started building confidence in my sound, I constantly worked on my flow and delivery to get to where I am now.
Over the past few years, I’ve been exploring my voice and experimenting with different sounds and cultivated me… Davo Tha CEO! I’ve found out so much about myself through music and exploring my gifts & talents. I learned how to engineer myself. I am a DJ, and a Photographer. I edit videos and create cover art, I pretty much do it all! I love every aspect of the craft! I am constantly learning & I am very passionate about the art. I take it very seriously but I still remember to have fun with it and most importantly to keep God 1st in everything! All praise and glory to God!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
HA! I wish it was a smooth road but no, it hasn’t been… AT ALL! It’s been long nights, early mornings, a lot of time and effort put into this. I thought about quitting so many times but God won’t let me go though with that, as he gives me the strength to keep moving forward and allows for more doors to open for me with this musical gift I possess. A lot of people that weren’t moving on the same path as me had to be removed and it hurts sometimes as I thought they would be with me in this journey but everything works out for the greater good. Everything happens for a reason. In this life, you have to be able to adjust and as that famous quote goes ”roll with the punches”. You have to believe in yourself and remember why you doing this and stay focused on the goal ahead. You can’t worry about the naysayers as most of the time they just envy the fact you are actually pursuing something bigger than just yourself. Its gone be times where it feels as if no one cares and no one is paying attention but that’s far from the truth especially in this day & age because everyone is always watching with how the internet/social media operates. You just have to stay focused and continue believing in yourself and God. You have to continue to move forward. Stay on your path and your purpose. Soon you’ll be right where you need to be!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well, the question would be, what don’t I do?! I am an Artist, Engineer, DJ, Photographer, Video Editor, Cover Art Specialist, and many more things! If you name it, I’ve probably already have done it or in the process of doing it!
I can say I’m pretty known for being an artist but truly, everything I’ve listed I’m known for. I have to thank God for these gifts and talents he has blessed me with.
What I am most proud of is how far I’ve come musically as an artist with how many projects I’ve dropped on my own and creatively engineering myself, learning the ropes and finding my style mixing-wise and vocally.
What sets me apart from others is my work ethic, positive attitude, good vibes, my mindset, and how I carry myself.
I am a Man of Honor. I stand on my own personal beliefs and principles. I treat everyone with respect and dignity. I’m always looking to help where I can. I’m constantly working on something and I have always had an optimistic view of things whether good or bad because it always works out for the greater good nonetheless. I’m often a cheerful, funny, outgoing guy. My mindset is very positive and I always figure things out! The show will go on and I think often times it blows people away because the things I say whether the past or present, it always happens in the future and it’s exactly how I said it was gone go! Regardless of the speed bumps in the road ahead, I will always get ahead! With God, I will always find a way or make a way!
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I feel like risk-taking is pretty much testing your faith. How much faith do you have? It takes a lot to be able to make a move on what you want. Life is a big risk to be honest. It takes faith if you want to step out and get a new job, new car, switch career paths, go talk to that person you like, etc. Everything involves risk but it’s up to you to make the jump. Some people don’t ever make the jump and that forms into regret. I’ve taken so many risks in my life it’s crazy! As of recent, I left a job that I wasn’t satisfied with and for a few months, I was without a job and stressing. With me taking that risk and stepping out on my faith, God blessed me with another job that had better qualities and perks than my last job! So with that being said, I rather step out on my faith and see where God takes me. At least I can rest well knowing I tried versus not ever attempting to try anything when it comes to moving forward in life. Nothing beats a fail like a try. Always keep God 1st! It even says in the Bible; If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can move mountains. (Matthew 17:20 – for reference)
