Rising Stars: Meet Elijah Casino

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elijah Casino.

Hi Elijah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started playing guitar at seven years old. I’ve always had a passion for music. Being able to create music as my favorite artists do has always been my favorite thing. I got my first keyboard around 10 years old and got a drum set around 15. I picked up a bass guitar about 3 months ago. I even got to go up on stage with my all-time favorite band Moontower and play bass for one song with them.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Two of my biggest struggles have been being hard of hearing and being LGBT. I was born deaf in my left ear and that has affected my life in many different ways, music especially. The way I hear and perceive music is different than most. For example, I can’t hear different pitches and frequencies as well as most. This made learning songs (especially by ear) a lot harder for me, but I never let it stop me. I worked harder to beat that obstacle.

Being transgender has affected the way I perceive myself. I went through thoughts of “you’ll never make it you’re not normal.” Through the years, as I’ve gained more acceptance of who I am I decided I want to be the representation in the music industry that I deserved growing up.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My band is called C⁰37. We are an indie soft rock band. We formed about a month ago and have gotten recognition from some of my favorite artists (moontower, arlie, neeve, and the haunt). We’re a two-piece with Xae on vocals and I play both guitar and bass. Our plan is to have a looping station on stage and I will slowly build up the instruments using loops kind of like how Ed Sheeran does.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory was seeing Taylor Swift in concert for her Speak Now tour. It was very last minute as my aunt and uncle gave my mom and I their tickets the day of the show. It wasn’t my first concert, but it was the first concert I went to where I truly felt the music and knew being on stage playing music was where I wanted to be.
