Rising Stars: Meet Elvis Agim of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elvis Agim

Hi Elvis, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and moved to the U.S. at the age of 8. Fashion has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, thanks to my mother, who ran her own business from our home. I would often help her with small sewing tasks, which is how I first learned to sew. By high school, I started altering my own clothes, and soon enough, friends began asking me to alter theirs—leading to my first paid fashion work.

Growing up in a traditional Nigerian household, there was always an expectation to pursue a conventional career. I followed that path by earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering, but my passion for fashion was undeniable. After graduating, I made the bold decision to focus on building my brand, MOVERE, which I officially launched in 2018. I specialize in creating custom-made garments, mostly handcrafted by me. Over time, I’ve been able to grow my following and client base, and while I’m still working towards my ultimate goals, I’m confident in the bright future ahead for MOVERE.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road hasn’t always been smooth. I took a gap year in college due to mental health challenges, which caused a delay in completing my degree. But I persevered and eventually earned my Mechanical Engineering degree. Now, I’m in a much better place mentally and emotionally.

The journey to building my brand, MOVERE, also came with its own set of struggles. When I first tried to trademark the brand name, it was already taken, which was a major setback. However, as fate would have it, the name became available just a month after I was told it wasn’t. That was just one of many obstacles I’ve faced along the way, but I’ve kept moving forward. Today, I can confidently say I’m in a much better position, both personally and professionally, and I’m excited for what’s to come.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a multifaceted creative, with my main passion rooted in fashion. I’m known for my ability to design and sew high-end garments from scratch, taking a concept from vision to reality. What I’m most proud of is my persistence and resilience, which have allowed me to grow my brand and inspire others to pursue their creative ambitions. What sets me apart is my clear vision for the future and my dedication to crafting timeless pieces. I don’t follow the fast-fashion trend; instead, I focus on creating garments that are enduring and won’t end up in landfills.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Even though it seems like I’ve made significant progress with the brand, I still feel like I haven’t truly launched it on the scale I envision. I see the brand competing with top-tier names, but I haven’t started delegating tasks yet. I’m finally nearing my financial goals, where I can afford to hire people to handle different aspects of the business. My biggest challenge right now is marketing. Once I overcome that hurdle, I believe the brand will take off and experience exponential growth, requiring me to quickly adapt to the increased demand. Also, the first official fashion show will be taking place in November 2024
