Rising Stars: Meet Gabriela Testini

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriela Testini.

Hi Gabriela, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Gabriela Testini, and I’m a writer. I was born on May 24th, 1980, in CABA (City of Buenos Aires, Argentina). I earned a B.A. in Communications and started my career in the corporate arena to become a freelancer later on. In 2015, I moved to Houston with my husband and kids. Since then, I started my training in narrative writing.

In 2021, I self-published my first novel Online in Spanish, which is now available in English on Amazon.

Now I currently finishing the proofreading of a short story anthology which is going to be available soon in Spanish on Amazon.

On the other hand, I’m writing the first draft of a non-fiction short novel, which is a first-person narrative, addressing my life with a myopic disability and the long way, that lasted more than twenty years to surgery. Last but not least, I’m starting the research for my next fiction novel.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Self-publishing is not an easy path. You must be your own editor, publicist, and public relationship. And the path of a self-published book has, in general, great acceptance at the beginning and then an abrupt sales drop. The people who know you have already bought the book, and those who don’t know you always buy books by well-known authors; they don’t risk something new. This is the moment when you need to learn about advertising and sales tactics. In my case, in addition to publishing books, I also offer writing courses in Spanish. I offer creative writing courses, narrative clinics, and shortly (together with a psychologist), I will be offering therapeutic writing courses. Living from writing is possible if you open an umbrella of other services writing-related.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
My first novel, Online is set within the contemporary realistic genre with a romantic tinge. This subtle and smooth novel brings Clara and Mariano, teenage friends separated by a tragedy, back together through Facebook. Clara moved on to continue her life in London while Mariano stayed in Buenos Aires. Since their reunion, they’ve explored together the limits of virtual encounters. What will the virtual relationship between them be like? How will their marriages be affected by their reunion? Will they be able to distinguish the line of long-distance infidelity? Will they continue their lives without allowing the past to take the present? Narrated in the present tense, Online captivates readers with its dynamics and leads them to discover how the characters experience their reunion through the lens of each of them.

Online it’s perfect for women who will enjoy a real life story, without taking away life’s romantic point of view.

“A smooth and subtle novel on marriage, couples and youth dreams.” Natalia Moret writer of “El año en que debía morir” (2022).

“I loved it! It has all the elements I like: everyday characters with aspects you love and hate. A captivating story you won’t let go, a real love (not perfect), and a shocking ending”. Alexandra Castrillón writer of “Detrás de mi nombre” (2021).
