Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriela Torres.

Gabriela Torres

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My baking journey started inspired by the joy of spending time with my kids. We shared lots of fun moments together in the kitchen. I baked everything my kiddos asked for, but Alfajores were always my favorite dessert. I missed the flavor of my country, so I dedicated over 6 months to perfecting the recipe. Soon, I started bringing them to every meeting and party, leading to family and friends placing orders.

Part of the journey was choosing a name that reflected my identity and origin. I decided on “Diablo Huma” because it represents a distinctive character in Ecuadorian Culture, playing a significant role in the Sun Festival, where people express gratitude for the Sun’s vital role in the harvest.

COVID unexpectedly opened doors, allowing my passion for baking and cake design to flourish, building a customer’s community that trusted and supported me to start my small business from home.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My biggest obstacle has been the lack of familiarity; people in Texas have no idea what an Alfajor is, and sometimes, they are afraid to try something new until they try and fall in love with the flavor and texture.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m home baker specializing in crafting Alfajores, Rustic Custom Cakes, and authentic Ecuadorian treats. Every creation is meticulously made from scratch, showcasing a dedication to homemade excellence infused with love.

I take great pride in my best-selling product, the ‘Traditional Alfajores.’ Their distinctive texture, rich flavor, and delicacy create an experience that transports you to the heart of South America.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I believe the most important characteristic is establishing a genuine connection with my customers. Understanding precisely what they seek in my baked goods is crucial, as I play a significant role in enhancing their celebrations and special occasions
