Rising Stars: Meet Iman Shahkarami of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Iman Shahkarami

Hi Iman, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2010, I moved to the USA to pursue my passion and study graphic design. While building my career in this field, I also explored photography, which quickly became more than just a creative outlet. Today, I am a Senior Production Artist at a company headquartered in Miami. Alongside my corporate role, I run my photography business, specializing in events, portraits, weddings, and business-related photography. My work has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Houstonian Magazine.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has been rewarding, but it hasn’t always been a smooth road. I truly enjoy what I do, both in graphic design and photography, but the industry comes with its challenges. One of the biggest struggles has been the increasing competition, especially with the accessibility of photography equipment and editing tools. With high-quality cameras available on smartphones and entry-level gear becoming more affordable, many people are entering the field, often offering services at significantly lower prices. Standing out requires not only technical skill but also a strong creative vision and consistent quality. Despite these challenges, I stay focused on delivering exceptional work and building long-term relationships with clients who appreciate the value of professional photography.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I wear multiple creative hats, balancing my work as a Senior Production Artist in the advertising industry with my passion for photography through my business, iManArts Photography. In my corporate role, I specialize in designing social media ads, Google Ad campaigns, display banners, and print materials for car dealerships and restaurant promotions. Outside of that, my photography spans events, portraits, weddings, and business-related photography, capturing moments with a keen artistic eye.

What sets me apart is my attention to detail, technical expertise, and ability to tell a story through visuals—whether it’s designing an ad that grabs attention or capturing the perfect shot in an unpredictable environment. I also embrace the latest tools, from AI-powered Photoshop features to DaVinci Resolve for video editing, ensuring my work remains innovative.

I’m particularly proud of my published work in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Houstonian Magazine, as well as my travel photography, which allows me to explore diverse landscapes, cultures, and unique perspectives through my lens. Additionally, I enjoy teaching others how to take high-quality photos with their phones, helping them see the world in a more creative way.

Despite the challenges of an evolving industry—like increased competition and the easy accessibility of photography equipment—I remain dedicated to delivering high-quality, professional visuals that stand out. Whether it’s through a drone-captured landscape, a meticulously designed ad, or a perfectly framed portrait, my goal is always to create something memorable.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The COVID-19 crisis was a powerful reminder of how fragile life can be and how important it is to love and support one another. During that time, I saw firsthand how small acts of kindness could make a big difference. Whether it was helping a friend, checking in on loved ones, or simply being more patient and understanding, the crisis taught me that human connection matters more than anything.

It also reinforced the idea that life is unpredictable, and we should appreciate the people around us, be kind, and not take anything for granted. No matter what challenges we face, treating others with respect and compassion will always make the world a better place.
