Today we’d like to introduce you to J Erin.
Hi J, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Art has always been an big part of my life. My mother, was a major influence on my artistic journey. I recall countless afternoons spent at the kitchen table, immersed in creativity—painting ceramics, exploring the vibrant world of acrylics on wood. Those moments ignited a passion in me, one that would only grow with time.
As I ventured into my teenage years, solitude became my canvas. Sitting in my room, I would listen to the radio, and I would sketch cartoonish drawings. Life took its course as I became a devoted wife and mother to my wonderful husband four remarkable children. During those bustling years, I found small opportunities to engage my artistry—painting murals in local homes and adorning children’s faces at birthday parties, all while embracing my role as a stay-at-home mom.
Then came a pivotal moment—a sudden emergency that required brain surgery. The recovery period left me in bed with a lot time to reflect and to draw. This time of solitude sparked an urgency within me to hone my skills, particularly in capturing the human form with increasing realism. With patience and practice, I emerged from that challenging chapter, witnessing my children grow and graduate, until eventually, only one remained at home.
With newfound time on my hands and a longing to expand my artistic repertoire, I turned my focus to oil paints. I immersed myself in a wealth of resources—devouring blogs, books, and countless YouTube tutorials. Online classes became my haven, each lesson a stepping stone to learning more of the skill. The brush soon became a trusted companion, and through rigorous trial and error, I cultivated a love that began to flourish.
My art caught the attention of those around me, and soon I found myself on the receiving end of offers to purchase my work. A turning point arrived when Becky Major, the curator of The Proletariat Gallery and Public House, reached out for a meeting. She introduced me to the Proletariats community initiatives and extended an invitation for my very first solo art exhibition. That moment was transformative; I began to weave the threads of my artistic pursuits into a business.
From learning to paint with my mother to the walls of local galleries, my journey as an artist has come full circle, allowing me to celebrate the beauty of creativity while forging connections within a lively artistic community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This road has truly been a blessing from God. Each of us faces our unique struggles, yet I choose to embrace the gifts I have been given. Indeed, the journey has not been without its bumps, as is the unpredictability of life itself. Yet, these obstacles often illuminate the path to our true purpose.
I aspire to be recognized for my artistic eye, for the depth and overtone that my art reflects, rather than being defined by the challenges that seek to anchor me down. Currently, life is abundant. I am immersed in my painting, enjoying robust health, and the warmth of my family’s happiness surrounds me. In this moment, I find fulfillment in the simple yet profound blessings that grace my life. That is all I could truly ask for.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I paint life! Capturing the spirit of individuals in their most authentic moments brings me joy. There is a unique beauty in observing children embrace their imaginations, unrestrained and free. My admiration for the wealth of experiences that life offers, from intimate family gatherings to serene landscapes, has me and my paint brush busy.
My passion lies in embracing the full spectrum of existence. Life is precious, and its fleeting nature inspires me to create. With over 20 years of experience, and well-versed in various mediums including oil, acrylic, watercolor, charcoal, and pencil. Oil is my primary focus at this time, allowing me to capture the depth and richness of emotion in my work.
I delight in transforming ideas into art—whether a family portrait, a beloved pet, or the abstract concept from a client’s imagination. Each commission becomes a collaborative journey, resulting in pieces that resonate deeply with those who see them. Art is my language, and through it, I celebrate the beauty in everything and everyone, reminding us all to cherish each moment.
What does success mean to you?
Art turns life’s Chaos into a refuge for the soul, I truly believe this. When I create a piece, it may originate from a desire to capture beauty; however, its true power lies in its impact on the viewer.
Each painting is a narrative, speaking to the experiences and sentiments of those who encounter it. This profound individuality of interpretation is what makes art a universal language.
Success, for me, is the connections I forge through my art. If my work can bring comfort, evoke happiness, or provide a medium for self-expression, then I consider myself successful. Each creation, while an extension of myself, is ultimately a bridge to others.
