Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamiah Day
Hi Jamiah , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Goatd locs is a south Houston 4/20 friendly, service oriented, family warmed loc shop.Im its owner Jamiah Day & here is a little insight on Goatdlocs. I started doing locs around the age of 15/16 years old. My mom had locs & she would ask me to help her part the back of her head because she couldn’t see. From then it went from me helping her part to her teaching me how to retwist step by step. Eventually she would let me help her with her retwist. After learning the technique I started to do retwist here and there, then I ended up getting locs around the age of 18. I had my sister start them & keep them up for my first month or two then I started to take care of my locs & try different colors, just experimenting honestly. The more I did my hair & would go out people would compliment me & ask me who did my locs. At this time I just did hair from time to time. My mom then kept telling me, “your work is good, why not put a name on it & make it a business? You already have the clients & a social media presence.” At first I was hesitant because I didn’t want to be seen as another person just doing hair, I wanted my business to mean something. I ended up going to jobcorps in February of 2021 & there is where Goatdlocs really was founded, grounded, & I figured out I really had a passion for doing hair. At the time I had a boyfriend & I would do his locs in jobcorps & he promoted & was kind of like a walking build board for my work. I caught a lot of support there but I couldn’t keep up with it at the time because of school so I gave it a break. Soon enough about month 6 out of the 9 I was there I realized nursing is not what I want to do, I want to have freedom over my time & have a heard opinions on how things are ran. Once I left jobcorps in august of 2022 I focused on hair & work, work & hair. After jobcorps I moved in with my sister who is also my hair mentor/hairstylist. She would give me tips on techniques or things she Learned from school because she started cosmology school that following year. From then I really invested my time & money into being an entrepreneur. After splitting my time up between work & being a loctician in February of 2023 I decided I wanted to be a full time hairstylist. That is really when my clients & social media presence concerning Goatdlocs shot up. I invested my saved money into better products, business cards, business flyers. I invested my time into learning to grow using social media & how to gain clients through social media as well. I was a full time hairstylist for about a year before I felt as if the business got slow. Which it did & in this business you will catch slow times especially during my transition into my name & vision for Goatdlocs. During price changes, policy updates, & starting to actually form the style of a successful business you’ll loose customers, noticed I said customers not clients because clients will stay as long as your service is still the best. Customers stay till your no longer within their means for what they feel is acceptable. I then began working again to form my “perfect” loc shop. Saving & investing my work checks into my loc business & watching it bloom is such a heart warming thing. Goatd locs made 2 in January of this year & has come a long way & has a long way to go but she’s on the right path. I think of this business like my child. Blood, sweat, tears, & love made the business you see today
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been easy at all entrepreneurship, is a journey within itself it’ll show you something’s about you within. It can be hard if not knowing how to take criticism & all the nay sayers, it’s also a wonderful thing. Your time is in your hands & you determine your success, only u can hold u back
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
So I specialize in doing loc retwist, I do offer other services but locs hold a place in my heart. From my styling, to my coloring, but I think my clients love me most because my retwist actually last even after they take down their style. One fact that sets my shop apart from others is that it’s 4/20 friendly & it’s usually a “one stop shop” my sister/roommate cuts hair so you can get a retwist, smoke, & get a hair cut all in one place with the plus fact of comfortability. I’m most proud of my growth, sometime I find myself down bc I feel I should be further with my business but I’m constantly reminded I’m on the right track
Who else deserves credit in your story?
First God, he established the work of my hands & gave me the heart to want to pursue being a loctician for whatever my purpose is through him. Second my mom, it wouldn’t be a Goatdlocs if she didn’t keep tell me put a name on my brand & be my own boss. Third, my sister Charlie, she is me mentor & second mom in one. She is a part of why I do hair also, if my sis can I know I can & I know she’s just one question away & we help each other with the business aspect of things. She critiques me & I help her out with social media presence & business cards.
