Today we’d like to introduce you to Jannet Evangelista.
Hi Jannet, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Xochimilco, Mexico, a name derived from the Nahuatl language meaning “the place of flowers” or “the field of flowers.” Looking back, I truly believe floristry was somehow always part of my destiny.
I came to the United States from Mexico at only 15 years old, without knowing the English language. As a Mexican-born immigrant, I had to adapt to a new country, a new culture, and a completely different way of life. I didn’t have the opportunity to attend college or pursue a formal education, so much of what I know today has come through hard work, experience, perseverance, and simply refusing to give up.
Today, I can proudly say that I am the owner of Trendy Blooms wedding and event floral design studio. Through faith, determination, and a genuine love for flowers, I have built Trendy Blooms into what it is today—a solid company decorating weddings and special events throughout Houston, Texas, and beyond.
But one of my greatest accomplishments goes beyond the beautiful weddings we create or how much the company has grown. It is being able to create jobs and opportunities within my own community, especially for other women like me. As a Mexican-born immigrant who started with very little, being in a position where the dream I built with my own hands can now provide opportunities for someone else is one of the things that makes me the proudest.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A very important chapter in my journey was the time I spent working for What’s the Occasion, which at the time was one of Houston’s largest and most established event production companies. That experience became a huge part of my education in this industry.
Working there gave me the opportunity to learn floral design on a much larger scale. I learned about event production, logistics, installations, teamwork, attention to detail, and most importantly, what it takes behind the scenes to successfully execute large and beautiful events. I was surrounded by talented people, and I absorbed as much knowledge as I possibly could. I will always be grateful for the opportunity, the experience, and everything I learned during that chapter of my life.
But eventually, I knew I wanted to create something of my own.
Leaving an established company and the security that came with it was one of the biggest decisions I had ever made. I took a leap of faith and started Trendy Blooms. I didn’t know exactly where that leap would take me, but I knew I had the work ethic, the experience, and the passion to give it everything I had.
Building my own company came with a completely different set of challenges. I had to earn the trust of my own clients, build relationships with wedding planners and venues, learn the business side of the industry, and establish my own name and reputation.
That leap of faith was scary, but it changed my life. Everything I learned along the way—from my years working in event production to every mistake and every opportunity as a business owner—helped shape the designer and entrepreneur I am today.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is much more than simply arranging flowers. It is about transforming spaces and creating an experience. As a wedding and event floral designer, I have the privilege of taking someone’s vision, personality, and story and translating it into flowers.
At Trendy Blooms, we specialize in weddings and special events, from intimate celebrations to large-scale productions. My work can include everything from bridal bouquets and ceremony installations to centerpieces, floral arches, candles, and complete floral transformations of a venue.
What I love most is that no two events are ever the same. Every bride, every couple, and every celebration has its own personality, and I want the flowers to reflect that. I love sitting with a client, listening to their ideas, and then taking those ideas further than they imagined.
Flowers have also become a form of creative expression for me. There is something incredibly rewarding about walking into an empty venue and, hours later, seeing it completely transformed. Then you see the bride walk in and experience it for the first time—that reaction is still one of my favorite parts of what I do.
I don’t just want to provide flowers. I want to create a feeling, a memory, and an atmosphere that people will remember long after the event is over.
What’s next?
Our future plans for Trendy Blooms are about much more than simply growing the company. I want us to grow with purpose.
One of my biggest focuses is expanding the educational side of what we do through workshops at our new floral studio, which we opened on June 1st in Houston’s East End. I envision the studio becoming a creative space where we can host seasonal workshops throughout the year—from spring and summer florals to Thanksgiving and holiday designs—as well as more specialized workshops for people interested in learning bridal and event floristry.
Another goal that is very close to my heart is becoming more involved in our community and finding meaningful ways to give back through flowers. One of my personal goals is to partner with a Houston women’s shelter around Thanksgiving and offer a complimentary floral workshop for the women there, where they can create something beautiful to decorate their Thanksgiving tables. Flowers have brought so much beauty and opportunity into my own life, and I would love to use them to bring joy to someone else.
Professionally, I also want to continue expanding Trendy Blooms into more destination weddings, taking our designs beyond Houston and throughout Texas and eventually beyond the state.
I have so many dreams for this company. I want to teach more. I want to travel more. I want to create more opportunities. I want to give back more. And ultimately, I want Trendy Blooms to become a name that is recognized throughout Texas and beyond—not only for beautiful floral design, but for the heart and purpose behind the company.
