Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay & Mars McCray.
Hi Jay & Mars, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started off as a professional dancer in the entertainment industry. I toured with Madonna, played in the movie Stomp the Yard, and went on to develop an organization called Throne in Los Angeles, which catered to the underprivileged youth in South Central LA in the performing arts as life progressed, I found that I had exhausted all possibilities of what I could accomplish in my home city Los Angeles, so I decided to move to Houston for a new life for me and my daughters. This is when I met my husband, Jermard McCray. Together, we have launched a salon and Day spa in Northwest Houston, where we have combined our 20+ years in the hair industry to give quality customer service and amazing hair skin, and nail services. Although I no longer live in Los Angeles, I still teach dance and African-American studies at LMU one day a week, and the rest of the week is dedicated to the upward progression of our salon and Day spa. A lot of people that know me personally always knew that I did hair outside of being a professional dancer. I feel that both are a form of artistry. My husband has owned barbershops not only here in Houston but as well as Louisiana, so it just felt natural for us to put our great ideas together and still find a way to keep the Throne name alive. Throne symbolizes power, peace, and a prosperity.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Although the journey is worth it, it has been rough. We started out First doing hair from home. We turned our office space in our house into a small salon suite so that it would give us a chance to build the clientele. We would need to open a salon. We set out on that goal for two years straight, and by the end of 2023. We were closing our deal on having our first Salon here in Houston, Texas

Throne Salon And Day Spa specializes in all hair care needs. We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as well as bringing all the newest and latest hair trends to fruition on our clientele.
We believe that it is very important to be a well-rounded Barber and cosmetologist. Expertise, skill sets, and family tradition is what keeps us ahead of the curb while still keeping that classic salon experience at the forefront.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Some of my favorite childhood memories include me doing all of the kids that lived on my block’s hair and then dressing them all in my dance recital clothes and putting a show on for my neighbors. I guess it’s safe to say that my husband and I were meant to be because since he was 11 years old, he used to cut hair on his front porch for the many children and young adults that lived in his community.
