Today we’d like to introduce you to Je’Rell Rogers.
Hi Je’Rell, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 2008, I came to Houston in 2008 to teach 8th grade Reading/Writing at Sharpstown Middle School. I instantly fell in love with the city and everything about it. I briefly left the city for 3 years to attend law school at LSU but came back for good in 2013. I’ve been practicing criminal law ever since I’ve returned to Houston and I haven’t looked back!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I was in high school and told my counselor that I wanted to apply to Notre Dame, I was told to be “realistic”. When I arrived at Notre Dame as a freshman, I quickly discovered that I was a minority in numerous senses– not Caucasian, not Catholic, not upper class– and this caused me to question my ability. When I graduated Notre Dame and applied for Teach for America in Houston and was placed in a middle school located in a low income, high crime area of Houston, I was told I would never be able to connect with the students. When I graduated law school and joined the District Attorney’s Office, friends questioned me as to why a black man would ever become a prosecutor.
At various points in my life, I’ve been doubted, sometimes by friends, sometimes by colleagues, and sometimes even by myself. Through it all, I’ve learned to appreciate the challenges because they force me to not settle for anything less than my best. I remind myself to stay true to who I am and my goals and my passions and let everything else fall into place.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an Assistant District Attorney with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. I currently serve in the role of a felony district court chief and I am assigned to the 180th District Court as the chief. As a chief prosecutor, I handle primarily murders and capital murders, including preparing the cases and litigating them in a jury trial. Additionally, I supervise junior attorneys and assist them in the preparation of their cases and assisting them at trial.
In addition to all of this, I am also running for Judge of Harris County Criminal Court at Law #14. Voters and other people in the community have come to recognize me and my campaign through my campaign’s slogan, “#fitforthebench”. I am a person who is very much into physical fitness and people on the campaign trail have gotten to know me as the “fit” candidate, During the course of my campaign, I have done unique things such as hosting a workout fundraiser event at my gym. I believe in the importance of physical fitness but I believe in mental fitness and emotional fitness and spiritual fitness and so this is what I mean when I say #fitforthebench.– fit in all the areas needed to be a good judge.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Consistency and discipline. Whether in the courtroom or in the gym, consistency and discipline goes a long way. When motivation runs out, consistency and discipline kicks in and will help carry you across the finish line, regardless of the goal.
