Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorahja Lewis .
Hi Jorahja , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a passion for makeup and music . I was in church choir growing up; singing all around the house. My mother was a singer and was always infatuated with beauty. So I grew up around these things . I didn’t take my dreams seriously until the day I passed my exam to become a licensed esthetician; I got into a bad car accident with my best friends . We got hit by a drunk driver and my bestfriend Cayla who was driving passed away. I was the only one who woke up and seen everything; I noticed I couldn’t feel my legs and could barely stay awake. I had to call my family to come help us . I had broken ribs a shattered foot and leg. I had to learn to walk again , and now have a metal rod in my leg. Cayla was so supportive of my beauty career and always pushed me to do different looks on my makeup . So after her passing I’ve dedicated my passions and career to her and I’ve vowed to never stop doing what I love in her honor .
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve had a lot of struggles in life , from being a preemie baby weighing at just 2lbs to my major car accident. I’ve battled mental health issues and PTSD from a lot of the trauma I have went through. I wasn’t able to attend my best friend’s funeral due to the extent of my injuries and it has still to this day never sat right with me; I haven’t mustered up the strength to go to her grave site yet . I was doing makeup in my wheel chair not even able to stand but I still wanted to do faces . I pushed through every challenge from surgeries to having to start over multiple times in life . Fighting illness and betrayal from people you love most! These challenges are what build your character.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am known for my makeup skills and my music . I am the MUA for a lot of big Houston artists in the city. Ive also done makeup for the Zeus hit show “joselines cabaret. I can do anything and bring any vision to life ! I am also an artist myself. I am a singer I have a couple songs already released and more on the way. I am an r&b artist and I like to think of my sound as something people can relate to. My artist name is Amaris (which is my middle name) it means promised by God. Singing is my passion and way for me to express myself vulnerably without shame . A lot of people know me for my big smile, beautiful voice, laugh and good energy . I am a light to behold and I make everyone feel comfortable around me . My heart and spirit is one of a kind and people admire my wisdom . I am most proud of my perseverance as I’ve gone through a lot of struggle in life personally and I have fought through every one of them and have continued to strive for success or what that looks like for me.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I feel like to really put yourself out there and network/ gain support you have to go outside ! Meet people ; have no shame in your game! Being shy and afraid to talk to people and advertise yourself will be the reason your business does not succeed! It doesn’t matter how good you are or how talented if you can speak up for yourself and advocate for yourself it won’t work! Get business cards ; walk up to random people , go to events where you know a lot of people will attend and show up for yourself . Smile and have good energy! You attract what you put out so always go into things with a smile
