Rising Stars: Meet Jordan McGuffie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan McGuffie.

Hi Jordan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been interested in film my whole life, I don’t remember a time without it. One day I picked up a camera and I realized, “Hey, I don’t just love watching movies, I wanna make ’em!”

I have been inspired by every filmmaker I’ve seen. I love showing off the marriage between visuals and music. I love evoking feelings in people and the effect film can have. I’ve always felt like the outsider, never really knowing how to connect to people. But with film, it’s like I get to properly put my thoughts and emotions out into the world. It’s a big and scary place, but through a camera lens, it begins to make sense.

Right now, I work as a photographer and a videographer, servicing various businesses around Houston, big and small.

My end goal is to direct feature films. It’s hard work getting there, but I hope that when the day comes, I’ll get to transport people to a whole new dimension of sight and sound.

It’s the only thing I know how to do, and I gotta do something.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nope, it has not been smooth. Filmmaking is a difficult process, oscillating between euphoria and wanting to rip your dried-up eyeballs out of your own head. There’s a lot of waiting and there’s a hundred little things that have to go into making every shot exactly what you want. and then you look at the final product and you’ll spend the rest of your life wondering how you could have made it better. It’s torturous but fun, for some reason.

And you have to be a people person of sorts, getting people to do what you want and not make them hate you.

Money is also another roadblock, as it is for everyone. Never enough money in the world to get exactly what you want.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve taught myself everything from writing to editing. But of all the jobs possible on a film set, I have to say directing is my favorite. I like having control over the project and guiding everyone on what exactly I want to see.

The emotion of the audience is the most important element to me, the “feeling”. It’s what guides me when I make a creative decision. I’m proud of my vision, and I believe it to be unique and stands apart from the trends going on today. I’m proud of running in the opposite direction from everyone else.

What matters most to you? Why?
Generating feelings. Every little decision you make as a filmmaker, from the lighting down to the textures of the sets and costumes, can generate emotions. It’s your job as a storyteller to take your audience on a journey and show them new ways to feel and connect with characters and their fictional worlds.

I value the symbiosis between emotions and originality.
