Rising Stars: Meet Jose Ramirez of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Ramirez.

Hi Jose, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all began with a beautiful sunset, the trees and the morning sunshine bringing life to everything around me. I would use my iPhone 5 to capture these moments that brought me comfort and would share them on my social media from time to time. After a few posts, people began to gravitate towards them, having the same feelings I had when I first captured them.
I quickly realized the impact my images were having and inspired me to take the next step by purchasing a camera. While working in construction, I was finally able to afford my first camera and began taking photography more seriously. I started planning small trips around parks and towns, allowing myself more freedom to explore and create.
I consider myself a photographer of natural light. This perfect combination allows me to become the artist that I am and create with my own natural touch, using my surroundings to bring more depth and meaning to every shot.
All for the love of art.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Challenges that include imposter syndrome, a lack of determination to continue, or even the fear of sharing work I’ve done. Things that most creative artists deal with. I do think one thing that prevented me not to focus much throughout most of my life is my mom’s health issues. She was diagnosed with kidney failure as soon as I got out of high school. I spent almost half of my life being her caregiver from doctor appointments and dialysis three times a week to hospital visits that lasted days in the emergency room. She had a lovely life nonetheless, showing strength in every aspect. Truly, one of the strongest souls I’ve ever seen. And after more than a decade of this routine, her heart finally took its last beat on March 29. A life as a caretaker takes the most of you mentally. But she was always supportive of my work. I want to continue and make her proud.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I want everyone to see all aspects of life, its pain and its glory. I want to share meaningful stories about love and misery. I believe a photograph can do so much of that and even more for your soul. From people to places. The sunrise of our every day life to our beautiful faces. Self love and the moments that we’ll keep forever in our hearts.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Anything that improves your well-being. People don’t realize how much the little things can impact your life, from waking up early and feeling that first touch of sunlight to completing a simple daily task. In my case, getting my camera out and going to places like park and take some images of my surrounding. Success is the small moments that add up to huge accomplishments. Any little moment is worth celebrating.
