Today we’d like to introduce you to Jovan Williams.
Jovan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 2022, my family and I made the big move to Houston, ready for a fresh start. After nearly 15 years in healthcare, I knew it was time for a change. My boyfriend and I had started planning a trucking business in 2023, but tragically, he passed away just as our plans were taking shape. Though heartbroken, I was determined to keep pushing our entrepreneurial dreams and pursue a new path.
Back in 2020, I had launched a flower business in California, 19eighty Flora, which ignited my passion for hosting and creating beautiful, aesthetic spaces. After countless sleepless nights of grieving, dreaming, and researching, inspiration struck: I decided to merge my love for crafting candles and flowers with a unique bar experience. That vision came to life as *19eighty Social*.
Originally focused on candle and flower-making experiences, I soon noticed a growing demand for hosting private events at my venue. Since that was already part of my business plan, I leaned into it—and *19eighty Social* evolved into what it is today: a fully operating, family-owned bar specializing in private events, networking, and intimate celebrations.
My children are the heart of this business. Aalon (21) is our small bites caterer, Aalayah (18) is our Floor Manager and the face most guests see, Aminah (11) keeps me organized as my personal assistant, and Amir (8) takes pride in his role as our janitor. Together, we’ve created a welcoming, safe space for the Houston community to connect and celebrate life’s special moments.
We’re thrilled to call Houston home. With my mom being from here, it feels full circle, and the community has been incredibly supportive of our journey. We can’t wait to see what’s next for *19eighty Social*!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Opening *19eighty Social* was a dream come true, but it came with its fair share of obstacles. Here are some of the challenges I faced and overcame along the way:
1. Starting Over in a New City
Moving to Houston in 2022 meant starting fresh. Building a network and establishing my business in a new city required extra effort, especially in such a competitive market.
2. Grieving While Pursuing a Dream
Losing my boyfriend in 2023 was devastating. We had shared dreams of entrepreneurship, and navigating grief while pushing forward with *19eighty Social* was emotionally taxing. However, this loss fueled my determination to create something meaningful.
3. Securing a Location
Finding the right space that fit both the vision and the budget for *19eighty Social* was a challenge. I wanted a venue that could accommodate a bar, candle and flower-making, and private events—without overspending.
4. Financial Hurdles
Like any new business, I faced financial constraints, especially as I transitioned from a stable career in healthcare to entrepreneurship. Budgeting for rent, permits, insurance, and marketing while ensuring quality experiences was a constant balancing act.
5. Obtaining a Liquor License
Getting the liquor license was a time-intensive process, requiring compliance with strict regulations. It was one of the key steps to creating the full *19eighty Social* experience, but it certainly tested my patience.
6. Shifting the Business Model
While I initially envisioned *19eighty Social* as a candle and flower-making studio with a bar, the demand for private event space led to a pivot. Adjusting my business model to meet this demand meant reworking plans, operations, and budgets, but it was a worthwhile shift.
7. Balancing Family and Business
Running a family-owned business means involving my children in the day-to-day operations, which is both rewarding and challenging. Ensuring they balance their roles with school and other responsibilities has required a lot of teamwork and communication.
Despite these obstacles, perseverance and a supportive community have allowed *19eighty Social* to bloom into a thriving, meaningful business. Every challenge taught me something valuable, and those lessons continue to shape the success of this journey.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
