Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaelynne Mason.
Hi Kaelynne, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi, my name is Kaelynne Joye Mason. I took my first breath in the heart of the DMV in the state of Maryland. Maryland and DC, particularly, are filled with diverse cultures and endless possibilities. But life had its challenges too. I was raised by a strong and resilient single mother who poured her love and sacrifices into my upbringing. She taught me the value of hard work, determination, and the importance of pursuing dreams against all odds. As I grew older, my mother yearned for better opportunities. So, with a heart filled with hope and ambition, she made the daring decision to pack our bags and head south to Atlanta; but I didn’t want to leave all that I knew behind. However, the bustling city held the promise of new beginnings and the chance to carve out a path of my own.
While Atlanta offered a fresh start, my thirst for knowledge led me on a journey to pursue higher education. I found myself in the sunny state of Florida, attending Bethune-Cookman University for my undergraduate studies. It was there that I discovered my passion for criminal justice and the profound impact it had on society. I excelled in my studies, graduating Summa Cum Laude, and it was a testament to the dedication instilled in me by my mother. But my hunger for knowledge was insatiable, and I knew there was more to learn and explore. I set my sights on Regent University, where I would pursue my Master of Law degree. It was an intense and transformative experience where I immersed myself in the intricacies of the legal world. I delved into the depths of law, understanding its power to shape society and bring justice to the forefront.
As I neared the end of my master’s program, I set my sights even higher. The allure of a doctorate beckoned me, calling me to dive deeper into the realms of knowledge and leadership. I embarked on a doctoral journey, enrolling in the Doctor of Strategic Leadership Program at Regent University. Each day brought new challenges and revelations, pushing the boundaries of my intellect and character. And now, as I stand on the precipice of a remarkable milestone, I can proudly say that I will be completing my doctorate in May of 2024. It is a testament to my unwavering determination, countless late nights, and the unwavering support of my loved ones. The journey has been arduous, but the reward will be immeasurable.
Throughout my academic pursuits, I never forgot the core of who I am—a singer, a mentor, a believer. These roles have always been intertwined with my scholarly endeavors. From the stages of local talent shows to the radio stations and churches that shared my music, I embraced my calling as a singer-songwriter with open arms. The music flowed through me, and I poured my heart and soul into every lyric, every melody. But my purpose extended beyond the spotlight. I wanted to inspire, empower, and uplift others. I founded the Joye Outreach Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to equipping women and youth with the tools to succeed in every facet of life. Through mentorship, resources, and a steadfast belief in their potential, I sought to create a ripple effect of positive change.
Today, as I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude. Gratitude for my roots in the DMV, where I learned resilience and strength. Gratitude for the opportunities that Atlanta provided, pushing me to reach higher and dream bigger. Gratitude for the education I received, expanding my horizons and sharpening my intellect. Gratitude for the music that has become the soundtrack of my soul, touching the hearts of those who listen. My story is still unfolding, and each day brings new possibilities. But one thing remains constant—my unwavering faith in God and the unyielding belief that with Him, all things are possible. As I step into the future, armed with my doctorate and a heart full of passion, I am determined to continue my journey as a singer, a professor, and a nonprofit owner, empowering others to discover their purpose and live a life of fulfillment and joy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the midst of my journey, there were challenges that shaped me, tested my resilience, and defined my identity. Growing up as a preacher’s kid came with its own set of pressures. People expected me to embody a certain image, to have it all together, and to conform to the expectations placed upon me. The weight of those expectations was heavy, and at times, it felt suffocating. But amidst the pressure, I discovered the strength to rise above. The absence of my father left a void in my life, but I refused to let it become an excuse for stagnation or self-pity. Instead, I channeled my pain into fuel for my dreams. I became determined to prove that I could achieve success, regardless of the circumstances that surrounded me. Unfortunately, this led to perfectionism and bitterness; however, I overcame that.
The journey was not without its obstacles. There were moments when I was shut down for opportunities simply because I was deemed “too light-skinned” or “too pretty.” The judgment based on external factors threatened to dim my light and stifle my potential. But I refused to be defined by societal standards or limited by others’ perceptions. I knew my worth, and I pressed forward, embracing my uniqueness and allowing my gifts to shine brightly.
One significant crossroad presented itself when I grappled with the transition from singing R&B music to gospel. Deep within my heart, I felt the calling to the gospel arena, where I could use my voice to uplift souls and spread the message of God’s love. However, fear crept in, and I worried about what people would think. I didn’t want to be confined to one genre or be judged for my choices. But as I wrestled with my desires and the opinions of others, I realized that my purpose transcended any genre or expectations. With a leap of faith, I embraced my calling to the gospel arena. I recognized that my music had the power to touch lives, ignite faith, and bring hope to those in need. I no longer allowed the fear of judgment to hold me back. Instead, I let my passion and conviction guide me, knowing that my authenticity would resonate with a wider audience.
It was during this pivotal moment that I felt compelled to share my story with the world. I penned my first book, “My Life, My Confidence in God,” bearing my soul and sharing the challenges I faced. In its pages, I revealed the triumphs that emerged from the depths of my struggles and the unshakable faith that carried me through every storm. It became a testament to the power of God’s love, His guidance, and the unwavering confidence that comes from surrendering to His divine plan.
My journey has been one of self-discovery, growth, and unyielding faith. I have navigated the complexities of identity, defied limitations, and embraced my true calling. Today, I stand as a testament to the incredible strength that lies within us when we surrender to God’s plan. As my music and my voice reach out to touch hearts, I am reminded that my purpose goes beyond any single genre or expectation. I am here to inspire, uplift, and empower others with the message of God’s love. In sharing my story and stepping into my calling, I have found liberation and the courage to live authentically.
Through the trials and triumphs, I have learned that true confidence comes from surrendering to God and embracing the unique path He has designed for me. My desire to reach a wider audience, touch lives, and make a difference in the world propels me forward, reminding me that my journey is far from over. With God as my guide, I continue to walk with unshakeable faith, ready to embrace the unknown and impact lives through the power of music, mentorship, and the unwavering belief in His divine plan.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My journey didn’t end with academia and music alone. I felt a deep calling to share my knowledge and empower others in different arenas of life. That’s why I made the decision to join a prestigious HBCU as a Law and Criminal Justice Professor and Program Coordinator.
Teaching became my platform to inspire the next generation of leaders. I brought my unique perspective, grounded in my experiences, to the classroom. Guiding students through the intricacies of Criminal Law and Procedure and Substance Abuse courses, I shared my passion for justice and the importance of understanding the impact of our actions. But it wasn’t just about the academic knowledge—I wanted to instill in them the values of compassion, integrity, and mentorship.
In my quest to make a difference outside the academic realm, I found myself dedicating my time to teaching Bible study to the vibrant youth community at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, and in my women’s Facebook group. It was an opportunity to connect with young minds and other women on a deeper level, guiding them to discover their purpose and encouraging them to pursue their dreams while staying grounded in their faith. Witnessing their growth and seeing their eyes light up with newfound understanding was a reward beyond measure.
But there was more to my journey. I realized that I could utilize my expertise and passion to assist others in their pursuits. So, I ventured into the world of branding consulting. Business leaders, non-profit organizations, and churches sought my assistance in developing their identities, enhancing their online presence, and aligning their purpose with their strategies. With my expertise in website design, branding, and designing outreach events, I became a trusted resource for those seeking to make a lasting impact in the world.
Driven by my passion for creating spaces where women can come together, connect, and grow spiritually, I founded the Jesus and Jammies Women’s Retreat. This retreat became a haven for women seeking solace, inspiration, and a deeper connection with God. Surrounded by like-minded individuals, we shared stories, sang praises, and delved into the Word, creating an atmosphere of love, healing, and rejuvenation. Today, as I stand at the intersection of music, teaching, mentoring, consulting, event organizing, and writing, I am grateful for the diverse paths I’ve embarked upon. Each endeavor has allowed me to touch lives, spark transformation, and create lasting change. My journey continues to evolve, and I am excited to see where the road will lead next.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Along my journey, the most important lesson I’ve learned is the significance of authenticity and the unwavering commitment to keeping God first in all that I do. In a world that often encourages conformity and masks, embracing one’s true self becomes a revolutionary act. It is through authenticity that we connect with our purpose, align ourselves with God’s plan, and make a profound impact on those around us. The importance of authenticity stems from the understanding that we are fearfully and wonderfully made by our Creator (Psalm 139:14). Each of us possesses unique gifts, talents, and perspectives that have been intricately woven into the fabric of our being. When we embrace and express these gifts authentically, we honor God’s handiwork and contribute to the beauty of His creation.
Walking in authenticity requires courage and a deep trust in God’s guidance. It means shedding the fear of judgment or rejection and embracing the path that God has set before us. Obedience to God’s calling is another crucial aspect of authenticity. When we walk in obedience, we surrender our will to God’s divine plan. It may require stepping out of our comfort zones, taking risks, or even facing opposition. Yet, by following His lead, we discover a greater fulfillment and a deeper sense of purpose. Isaiah 1:19 encourages us, “If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good things of the land.”
The journey of authenticity is not meant to be a solitary pursuit; it is about serving others and using our gifts for the benefit of God’s kingdom. Matthew 5:16 reminds us, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” When we use our gifts selflessly, without holding back, we become vessels of God’s love, grace, and transformation. In this journey, it is vital to release the worries and anxieties that can hinder our progress. Instead, we are called to trust in God’s provision and guidance.
As I reflect on my own journey, I have come to understand that authenticity, obedience, and keeping God first are intertwined. When we embrace our authentic selves, walk in obedience to God’s calling, and prioritize our relationship with Him, we unlock the fullness of our purpose and experience the abundant life He has promised. It is a journey of faith, trust, and surrender, where we witness the extraordinary work of God in and through us.
So, let us not be stingy with our gifts but instead offer them generously for the benefit of God’s kingdom. Let us trust in His plan, embrace our uniqueness, and walk in authenticity, knowing that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. May we find the courage to release worry, follow His lead, and be vessels of His love, grace, and transformation. For in authenticity and keeping God first, we discover the true essence of our purpose and the limitless possibilities that lie before us.
