Today we’d like to introduce you to Khamiyah Mackbee
Hi Khamiyah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Ever since i was a little girl i always had dreams of making my name mean something. I remember when I was younger and would go to the nail shop with my mom and just remember thinking “i want to do nails because they don’t have to work for nobody”, which kind of inspired where i am today. I always knew i was talented and special just wasn’t sure about what was and wasn’t my lane so i dibbled and dabbled in a little bit of everything. When covid first hit in 2020 I tried to get into nails which was very lovely and gave me an outlet to express my creativity but it just wasn’t my lane and i felt it, i enjoyed doing them and just exploring within my talents but it didn’t last long due to me just having lack of motivation and support which made me lose interest quickly so my “nail tech” phase didn’t really last long. months prior to covid i started really gettin into tik tok like on there scrolling almost everyday lol which i seen people doing their own hair which was mainly wig installs due to everybody and everything being closed due to covid. About 2 weeks after i gave up on my “nail tech” career i was just being nosey and bored looking through my moms bucket of wigs and i seen a lace front and thought “i seen these on tik tok lets put it on”. After struggling for hours i finally had it on and installed and for it being my first time it looked SO GOOD! i was so super proud of myself smiled from ear to ear and even though the process was a bit if a hassle i fell in love with having a vision and bringing it to life regardless of wanting to stop and give up because it wasn’t coming out the way you wanted. From that day forward i knew i loved doing hair but i lacked a tremendous amount of confidence and also motivation and support so even though i enjoyed doing hair becoming a hairstylist at that time was never in my playbook, but i continued to stay consistent and perfect my craft so i did my own hair. Fast forward to 2021 Im now back in school and its no longer virtual i ended up going to high-school with some old friends of mines and we instantly clicked again just like old times. eventually i ended up expressing to them that i do hair and from that day forward they instilled so much wisdom and support towards me i felt i finally had the confidence to finally do hair. My friend ended up booking an appointment with me to do her hair for her birthday which she wanted a wig install and i did TERRIBLE lol but i definitely seen my potential i knew i would become better than this if i just continued to perfect my craft which is exactly as i did. 2022 i finally ended up creating me a instagram account for just my hair business where i posted videos of me doing hair, tutorials and etc… still not where i know i could be but definitely making my way their and had so much support from my peers along the way which let me knew i had it and can finally make my name mean something. From that point on i just stayed consistent continued to perfect my craft, believe in myself and most importantly continued moving forward to where i created a business website, and gained a steady clientele to where as i am now Slayedbydon.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
it had not been a smooth road, but i know pressure makes diamonds so i just continue to pray for the best. Some of my main struggles i struggle with is consistency, majority of the time life simply be lifing which it isn’t always easy at all honestly but i know people are as consistent with your business as you are so I’m working on it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Im a hairstylist and loctician who specialize in Wig installs, frontal/ closure sew ins and dreadlocks. I’m most known for my Wig installs because right now thats a service I’m really been trying to become better at and promote but I’m also known for loc styling/ retwisting. I am most proud of progress. looking back at where i started and where i am now is just a full circle moment because now only do i know i can become better than this at some point of my career i begged to be where i am now so I’m just so grateful and I’m also proud of trusting myself and never giving up even when i had plenty opportunities to do so. One of the main things i think that sets me apart from others is that no matter where i am mentally, financially, physically or emotionally in life i continue to try and be my best self not just for me but my clients as well, my business represents perseverance because its not about where you are its about where you could and would be if you just continue to not just trust yourself but trust God as well and realize that we all have a purpose on this earth rather its Hair, nails, or being a doctor. Life isn’t about finding yourself its about discovering who God created you to be on this earth and in this life and we can all make an impact on our lives and other if you would just believe. and i try and instill that in every single one of my clients, I want my clients to know that their Faith and Their life isn’t determined by anything physical it all about what you believe and trust.
What are your plans for the future?
This year i plan on launching my very own hair business! where we produce nice, soft and raw luxurious hair and hair products, we also plan on relocating and setting up a foundation worldwide! Will be moving to a different State but will be back in fourth so I’ll be doing and providing hair in 2 different states which is HUGE!
