Rising Stars: Meet (Kimbo) Kimberly Hernandez of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to (Kimbo)Kimberly Hernandez.

Hi Kimbo, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
At the age the age of 15 I decided that I wanted to share my love of music with others. Living in a musical family, where everyone plays an instrument and sings, I was able to fall in love with music, but there was something that was missing. The audience and community.
I decided to go to my first open mic in Houston and I performed my favorite genres of music ( soul and Boleros)
I sang Nina Simone, Lauryn Hill, and Los Panchos.
From that moment, I decided to go by the name of KIMBO. It was a nickname given to me back in middle school that always stuck with me. I continued to perform at open mics all around Houston where I would sing covers in the genres of soul, R&B, and Latin.
One person even called me Soulful Selena, and that is the greatest compliment I have ever received. as a first generation Mexican America, being able to sing Selena Quintanilla’s music while also singing my favorite genre of music, which is soul has been a big part of my identity. Selena Quintanilla has paved a way for my singing career here in Houston since I’ve done Selena tributes. Houston is such a diversity city and I’m grateful to be a part of it. Without my roots and my parents, I wouldn’t have my love for Latin music, and without Houston and the culture, I wouldn’t have my love for soul. This is the one place where I can have them both.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve been singing and performing in Houston for seven years now. The one struggle as of right now has been finding my true sound, but that will come with time. With the right resources and right people, creating the music I want to create will be possible.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Houston vocalist. I have done background vocals for Micah Edwards and Messa Montana. As well as singing the national anthem for the dynamo, the Rockets, the dash, and in city hall. I performed for the late Houston mayor at a Hispanic heritage month event as well. I have performed a Selena tribute at the post Houston. And of course, whenever there’s a chance to share my original music, I continue to take those opportunities as well. I love all these different opportunities that I have been given to sing whether that be for myself or with others. There is a huge community of Houston musicians that share the same love and passion. And it is a privilege and a part of the experience to create and perform together.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’ve never been the person to believe in luck but I do believe in fate. The one thing I love to do is sing and sharing that with others. I am not the best in the world nor the most successful but it is my assignment that I am called to do in this world.
