Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristi And Diego Barragan.
Hi Kristi and Diego, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Our story started in 2012 as we met through a sports camp for people with disabilities. We began a friendship and also became aware that we both were attending the University of Houston. In 2019, we got married and we have put aside the stigma of limitations for people with disabilities. We both have successful careers. We have traveled all over the world and are determined to break barriers even if the world is not specifically suited for us.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In our perspective, whether you have a disability or not, there will always be challenges. We view tough roads not as obstacles, but as opportunities. For example, traveling in other countries, is not always as convenient for us. Sometimes elevators are broken or buildings are grandfathered as a piece of history that cannot be altered to accommodate people with mobility limitations. Since we are aware of these obstacles, we try to scout out our surroundings as we are traveling to see how we can best accommodate the situation. One of our greatest strengths is that we’re not afraid to ask for help.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Kristi is a supervisor at the front desk of a hotel. She is known for always having a positive attitude and a helpful hand. She does not let her physical limitations get in the way of doing her job. She is most proud of making people smile just by interacting with them.
Diego works in the multi-family construction industry, where he excels at coordinating projects, maintaining strong relationships, and handling all aspects related to construction. He is known for always keeping a positive attitude, even when a difficult situation arises. What he’s most proud of is proving that a disability doesn’t define one’s ability to thrive professionally.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to us is having the same opportunities and chances as anyone else—regardless of our use of wheelchairs. We approach life with a can-do attitude; things may look a little different, but we’re committed to finding solutions that meet our needs while also proving that, with determination, anything is possible.
