Rising Stars: Meet Latoria Washington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Latoria Washington.

Hi Latoria, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Latoria Washington, aka Toria Shanaè, the stylist. I’m 36 years old, and I have one amazing 14 year old daughter, D’Ana. I’m a stylist”….and the rest how it currently follows. I started off doing hair back in ‘98-‘99, I was only 12-13 years old. I would style all the girl’s hair at school on Thursdays and at home in my room on Fridays for the games. Back then, flat twists, braid styles, buns, and ponytails were in style. I remember I would only charge $10 to do a style. I grew up watching my mother do braids and locs in the 90s, and I wanted to learn to do hair. I stayed consistent with teaching myself different styles and techniques as I got older. And I finally decided to come out of the medical field and pursue my cosmetology degree. I attended Aveda Institute in Birmingham, AL in 2013, and I transferred to the University Academy of Hair Design in Tuscaloosa where I graduated on Sept. 15, 2015.

Immediately after graduating, I joined Lauryn England’s (formally Jaylon Aaron) salon. She is a celebrity hairstylist and reality star. I was also mentored for a short period by Kevin Kirk of Kirk Pro and the Babybliss Family. I’ve networked with amazing people over the years. I love attending hair shows and events.

Today, I’m a mobile stylist looking to make Houston my forever home. I welcome you guys to book me as your stylist and get my amazing hair experience. I specialize in lace application, wig making, braid styles, quickweaves, and silk presses. I am also a certified mink lash tech. I will be offering those services in September.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road. I have experienced everything from financial struggles to emotional setbacks. Being in the hair industry can sometimes be overwhelming, so you have to stay focused on your passion. There have been several times I’ve fell, but I kept God first and kept the faith.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a hairstylist and I specialize in all categories of hair services. What I love about my work is that I get to make other people beautiful for a living. It’s so rewarding when I do someone’s hair, and it brings out new confidence they haven’t seen in a while. I’m known for being very fun with my clients. We always have a great time while they’re getting serviced. I am most proud of how I can bring out beauty from the inside.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Making other people smile makes me happy because you never know what someone’s going through. Doing hair makes me happy because it’s an outlet for me to be creative or relieve stress if needed. And every minute I spend with my daughter makes me happy.
