Rising Stars: Meet Lauren Bledsoe

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Bledsoe.

Lauren Bledsoe

Hi Lauren, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Since middle school, I have wanted to be a mental health therapist. Growing up, I struggled with depression, anxiety and perfectionism. I became interested in psychology and figuring out why people struggle with certain things and how the brain works. I also had always been the friend that people went to when they needed someone to listen to them.

I loved being there for friends and helping them through their struggles. I started researching everything that I could do with a psychology background and fell in love with the idea of being a therapist. I went to Texas A&M University for my bachelor’s of psychology (with a minor in sociology) and then to Sam Houston State University for my master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

From there, I did my internship at New Dimensions Day Treatment Center and at a group private practice. Once I finished my internship, I decided to start my own private practice called Good Insights Counseling. I have had my practice since 2021 and absolutely love it!

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There were some bumps along the way. During grad school, I was working two part-time jobs while also in a practicum internship. I was also planning my wedding at the time, so there were a lot of things I had to juggle.

Because of my perfectionistic tendencies, I was pretty hard on myself with trying to balance everything and maintain a 4.0 GPA. Once I graduated and started my internship outside of school, the COVID pandemic hit. This slowed down my progress in getting internship hours.

There was also a learning curve for starting my own practice. Ultimately, everything worked out, though, and I am so glad with where I am at!

I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a mental health therapist, I help people through their struggles with mental health. The majority of the population I see struggles with depression, anxiety, perfectionism, OCD, self-esteem, and finding a balance in their lives.

I believe that my own experience with mental health allows me to help those who struggle. A lot of the referrals I get are from current clients referring me to others. I mainly get referrals for anxiety, depression, and perfectionism. I am most proud of being able to help clients and to be able to see their progress.

I love being able to watch clients grow into themselves and become more confident in who they are. From what I have been told, what sets me apart from some therapists is that I use a lot of book or TV show references during sessions as examples of how to implement therapeutic strategies that can be helpful.

I believe it helps clients to see their favorite characters using similar techniques or getting through difficult times. I am also very relaxed in sessions, which helps clients relax.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love that our city has many activities to do! If we are ever bored, it can be easy to find something fun to do in the city for a new experience.

My least favorite part about our city is the traffic, if I am being honest. Rush hour can be brutal!
