Rising Stars: Meet Maria Wynn- Lofton of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Wynn- Lofton.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My love for baking began as a child, watching my mother bake delicious treats. Over the years, that passion grew even deeper when I became a mother myself. I began making foods and desserts from scratch because I wanted to know exactly what ingredients I was putting into the things I was feeding my family.

Over the past five years, I have continued to perfect my recipes and share my baked goods with family, friends, and loved ones. Baking became more than just something I enjoyed—it became my sense of calm and a creative outlet while navigating life as a mother of two toddlers. One of my favorite parts has always been hearing the feedback from the people who tasted my baked goods and knowing that something I created brought them joy.

Then one morning, I woke up and a light bulb came on. I told myself, “There is no excuse not to get this business rolling.” From that moment, I decided to take the necessary steps to turn my passion into a business.

The name Thenia’s is short for my mother’s name, Parthenia. She has always been an inspiration to me, and naming my business after her is a way of honoring the woman who first inspired my love for baking. She continues to inspire me as I grow both in life and in the business world.

Today, Thenia’s Sweets & Treats is a reflection of my love for baking, my family, my journey, and the legacy that inspired me to begin. My goal is to continue creating homemade desserts made with love while building something meaningful that I can be proud of and pass on for years to come.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not always been a smooth road. When it comes to baking, there is a lot of testing, trial and error. There are days when a recipe comes out perfectly, and then there are days when that same recipe may completely fail. It can be frustrating, but I’ve learned that you have to keep trying until you get the results you’re looking for.

There have been times when I’ve had to go back to the drawing board, make adjustments, and try again. Those challenges have taught me patience, consistency, and the importance of not giving up. Every mistake has been an opportunity to learn and improve.

Building a business while being a mother also comes with its own challenges. There are busy days, unexpected obstacles, and moments when things don’t go according to plan. But I remind myself why I started. My passion for baking, my family, and the desire to build something meaningful keep me moving forward. The road may not always be easy, but every challenge has helped me become a better baker and a stronger business owner.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in homemade desserts made with love and attention to detail. I create a variety of baked goods, including cookies, cakes, cupcakes, pound cakes, and custom dessert tables for birthdays, weddings, showers, celebrations, and special occasions.

What I’m most known for is the homemade taste and the care that goes into every order. I take pride in creating desserts that not only look beautiful but taste just as good. I’m constantly testing and perfecting my recipes because I want every customer to have an experience they remember.

What I’m most proud of is how far I’ve come. What started as something I loved doing for my family and friends has grown into a business that allows me to share my passion with so many others. I’m proud that I’ve taken the courage to turn something that brought me peace and joy into something I can build a future with.

My goal is to give each customer more than just a dessert—I want to give them something made with love, create a memorable experience, and become a part of their special moments.

How do you define success?
I used to think success was defined by the dollar bill—how much money you made, what you had, and how far you could go financially. As I’ve grown, my definition of success has changed.

Today, I define success as doing something that brings you joy and peace while creating something meaningful. Success is being able to wake up and know that you’re building something that you are passionate about and proud of.

Success is also about creating a legacy—something that can be passed down for years to come. I want Thenia’s Sweets & Treats to be more than just a business. I want it to be something my children can look back on and be proud of.
