Rising Stars: Meet Mary Jane Gonzales

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Jane Gonzales.

Hi Mary Jane, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When the pandemic hit, I was restless. I got my sewing machine, dusted it off and started sewing little things. I wanted to make something with meaning. I had a bear pattern that I had never used, I thought, why not?

I made the Bear, posted it on the Nextdoor app. People started contacting me about how I make my bears. I told them that most fabrics could be used. My first-ever customer needed 7 bears, but she wanted to use her late husband’s clothing. She was so grateful when I made them!

I had another customer tell me that her children went everywhere with their late grandfather’s shirts. This absolutely broke my heart! She requested some bears to surprise her kids at Christmas. They were delighted!

Memory Bears are a precious thing. I love making them, because they mean so much for anyone that is grieving.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. During the pandemic, a lot of supplies were hard to come by. Sometimes I had to improvise to make a sturdy Bear. Materials can still be in short supply at times.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I love the fact that I can definitely take some of my work on the go. I’ll pack a little bag with noses, and eyes. So I can install these when I am waiting, say at an appointment. I’ve also sewn the backs of Bears closed at appointments.

I’m known as the Memory Bear lady 🤣.

What sets me apart is patience about the grieving process. I’m not trying to be a salesperson. I’m not pushy. I’ve had people contact me up to six months after initially contacting me.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
You can see some of my work on my Facebook page. Memories Gift Shop Houston.

I hope to expand out of my home soon. 🙏🙏🙏
